| Changing gif to jpg? Karin 00:56:58 |
| | It was suggested that I try my question here. Publisher98 changes all my pictures to gif. I was given a link to directions. It suggested that I go in the website folder and select the file with the graphic. I saved the original grapic in the folder that contains my publication. I followed the directions and clicked on the numbered page where the graphic is found on my website. Changed the HTML to reference my original graphic. When I tried to open it in the web browser nothing changed. In the directions is mentioned: "image file should be in the same folder and at the same level as the Html". I am not sure what "same level" means. Any help would be great. Thanks - Karin

An analysis program keeps providing me with page optimisation advice including "Your Title tag is not the first tag in the <HEAD> area of your page". | Re: How do I loop an animated gif file in Publisher 2003? DavidF 20:33:01 |
| | If you have an animated GIF, then you insert it into your web page just as you would any other image, but of course it won't "animate" until you do a web preview, or post it to your site.

| MS Publisher and website problems Scott 16:40:12 |
| | I have a website I put together for a local festival using MS Pub 2003. Used a prior version last year on my computer at work Pub2000 (never had a problem). In checking prior to using FTP, the site worked fine (all hyperlinks etc worked fine). In posted to FTP and host, it just will not work. Continually get the same message the IE has to close. In checking this on another computer the same thing. The IE suggested that I disable the add-on's until the problem is solved. Ended up disabling all the add-on's (about 12). No change.
In transferring to FTP I use the Pub "Publish to Web", key FTP site address etc, it shows the transfer. In posting to the host, I key the files from the "My Network Places" and clicking on "index" where the files are listed. I omitted the "wmz" files thinking that was causing the problem. Inreading the other blogs I saw this wasn't a problem and went back and keyed those in as well. Still the same thing. This site is about 17 pages.
I found one problem was the firewall and disabled that and was at least able to post to the FTP site. (Using Earthlink and subsequent add-on's). I went so far as to create a simple 1 page site from the templates provided but still the same thing, same error message. Is there a simple fix here, I've spent obscenely too many hours on this. Ironically, this site is no bigger than what I did last year on Pub 2000. Am I overlooking something?
The site is "www.celebratemidlandmagic.com". Any help or suggestions will really be appreciated!

| Watermark suggestions Hudson 18:08:18 |
| | My photo editor software is Paintshop Pro IX (I have the upgrade to X on the way). I am using FrontPage 2003 to design my website.
Would it be better for me to purchase a specific watermarking program to use with FrontPage 2003? My website (a total novice working on one at home for the first tiime) will contain photographs and images that are my property, copyrighted material, and, I definitely want everything watermarked with my copyright.
If so, can anyone suggest a low-cost watermarking program that will work smoothly and not conflict with FrontPage 2003 and/or Paintshop Pro X?
Thank you in advance.

| RE: How can I make the pages of my website different lengths? Kurt 16:26:07 |
| | Hello David, As a first-timer using Pub. 2003, I am having a similar difficulty designing my little static website. I saw the FAQ, which states that in 2003 length is automatically adjusted for the content. While the content of my Master Page only extends down to about 768px, the length of the MP itself is an arbitrary 4608px. I set it that long because Pub. was not automatically adjusting lengths. Then I added a 1px border around the whole thing as a design element, which could go away, but I'd rather not.
I tried setting the Master Page length to 3116, the length of my longest page so far, but it just trashed the layout on all the Publication Pages, regardless of their actual length.
At this point, I am stuck! May I send you my .pub file for your review?
thanks, Kurt

| website won't work Speedy 04:13:56 |
| | Could someone help! I have been using publisher 98 to publish my website without any problems all the pictures load ok and all the links work fine.
I ungraded to publisher 2003 the homepage works fine But when you click on the link to the index page you just get a blank white page with the page number on the bottom information bar.
i have read through all the information on the subject and know it might have something to do with framing.
What i don't understand is why it all works fine on publisher 98, and all works well when you preview the site before publishing useing IE 6 ON PUBLISHER 2003., but then the problems start after i have uploaded the site.
I thought if i was going to have the framing problem i would have had it with publisher 98.
Please could someone have a look at the site and see if you think it is a framing issue or if it is something else( http://mysite.orange.co.uk/autostars) With Many Thanks Brian

| "Phantom" images when loading Trishe 03:55:12 |
| | I have created a site using Pub 2003 with nice results. However, sometimes when it loads I see "phantom" images/text: images and text that I thought I had deleted. Most of the time it happens when I navigate BACK to a viewed page. It is just momentary, but I am curious as to what is going on. It "bugs" me, but others to who have viewed the site say it loads so quickly that they hardly notice. Any ideas?
Thanks.

| Re: Not Publisher, but MS Word questions... DavidF 02:07:25 |
| | Karen,
I read this newsgroup with OE, and your post just showed up today. I don't know if your computer is set on the wrong date, or something else is wrong. But that is probably why you haven't received an answer.
Word, like Publisher CAN produce web pages, but neither is intended to produce anything other than basic simple websites...that often do not enjoy good cross browser support. Filtered or unfiltered, you will probably still have problems getting good cross browser support. You might post your question on a Word newsgroup and get a better answer...I don't know if they have one for web building or not.
You said that you do not have access to a better program, and that is why a lot of people choose to use Publisher or Word. Recently another poster suggested the FREE web building program here: http://www.nvu.com/index.php
Perhaps you could check it out as it supposedly has good cross browser support...

| Linking to a web based photo gallery Trishe 21:03:02 |
| | I have added a photo gallery page to my website using Pub 2003. I have inserted images from my local file. I have tried to create a hyperlink from the image/s on the page to a folder that includes a web based photo album. (The web gallery contains an index.htm, slides, thumbs, res)
I have uploaded (FTP) this web-gallery to my remote. I have in Edit hyperlink typed in the path/url as the address to my remote as the hyperlink. Doesn't work...Keeps looking in My Documents.
How do I get it to link to my URL and the gallery index?
I really like the publisher pages...haven't had a problem till trying to do someting fancy....
Hope I am specific enough. I have read and re-read posts and links and am getting a little frustrated. (Played with creating a basic site in Dreamweaver, but have had all kinds of browser issues compared to publishing a PUB page.)
Thanks!

| RE: how to change title Gregm 20:11:01 |
| | [in publisher 2007]
Along the bottom of the screen are the page numbes [1][2][3][4] etc.
Right click on the page you want to name, Choose Web-page options (or rename) and fill in a title. Whilst you're there, fill in a descriptions ane keywords for search engines.
[Other method would be the drop-downs Tools->Web-page options]

| RE: Make web pages centered... Gregm 20:07:01 |
| | Tristan,
This is a common question, see the earlier post 7/30/2006 'Webpage centered"
Your page is desgined to be ~1000 pixels wide, therefore any screen much wider than that (e.g. 1280 pixels wide or above) will have some blank space to the right. On a 1024px wide screen it fits perfectly.
Its good that you've designed to 1000px, as you can be pretty sure most users today have screens of at least that resolution. Many of the objects on the page are positioned relative to the top left-hand corner of the display, it seems to me be more complex
I haven't found a good answer to centering the page. It is possible to hand-edit the files created by Publisher, but this is fiddly and laborious. It seems to be more complex in practice than putting <Center> tags around the contents of the page (After the BODY tag). Others in this forum may be able to help you as they've helped me in the past.
To be honest, I think you may be worrying too much about the space on the right - as annoying as it may be.
Publisher seems to be good for rapidly creating simple webpages - if you want to develop beyond that then you'll need to change in the future to a tool that gives you more control than Publisher. For example, liquid layout where pages flow to fill the screen - generally achieved by sizing things as percentages of the desktop rather than absolutely (e.g. defining a table tobe 50% of the screen width rather than 512pixels). I prefer liquid layout - the user's paid for a big screen, might as well let him use it!
What I think publisher is good for is rapidly testing designs of webpages (look, graphics, schemes, layout) and that's an important skill to develop. Good luck!
