XSS for SEO and Site search script security update announcement Www.1-Script.Com 03:35:36
 Hello everyone,

I would not post it here if this particular vulnerability of one of my
scripts did not turn out to be such a PITA in terms of SEO. The actual
announcement is below, but to give you a gist of the problem with XSS - if
you accept GET CGI queries and show user input on the screen someone with
ill intentions can craft a URI that will make your script inadvertently
link to any bad neighborhood there is. After that the bad guy only needs
to post a thousand or so of blog comments with this URI as his website
address and voilla - your site's is linking to bad neighborhoods by a
boatload and your ranking sink (stink? you get the idea). I have been
battling with this on a large site for several months now and cannot tell
you how frustrating and very expensive consequences of this XSS
vulnerability can be.

So, if you happen to use 1-Search script of mine please do upgrade ASAP.
If not - take a second look at your other scripts, especially those
accepting GET queries because GET take a rather annoying XSS problem to
the whole new search - engines related level.

Here's the announcement:

Mandatory Security Upgrade for 1-Search site search script from
1-script.com

1-Script.com would like to announce availability of new version 1.90 of
1-Search script which is a mandatory security upgrade. Please get your
files along with installation and upgrade instructions here.

http://www.1-script.com/download.php

We encourage you to perform the upgrade as soon as possible.

All previous versions of 1-Search (1.80 and earlier) are affected.

The vulnerability may allow an attacker to submit specially crafted search
string that will initiate a JavaScript code execution or show a
non-sanctioned link to an inappropriate website which can have negative
effect on your search engine positioning.

The new version is designed to filter the XSS JavaScript along with other
HTML tags. Additionally it has GET query disabled thus eliminating the
possibility for an attacker to expose any bad links on your sites by
linking to them from other sites.

Omit Meta Tag Keywords? Guest 18:23:59
Someone told me that meta tag keywords have fallen from
favour and that it is better now to omit them.

He said that there has been so much abuse of keywords
that searchengines are now starting to ignore them, and
even to award negative ranking for their misuse.

He also said that omitting them forces the spiders to index
the whole page.

Any truth to his claims?

I am certainly no expert - I am just trying to figure things
out as I go along, so advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Cypher - Natural Language to RDF/SeRQL for the Semantic Web Smonroe 18:03:00
 Hi All,

I've recently released a program I'd like to share with those
interested in building semantics and natural language processing into
search engines implementations.

Cypher is one of the first software program available which generates
the metadata representation of natural language input. Cypher produces
RDF graph and SeRQL query representations of sentences, clauses,
phrases and questions. The Cypher framework provides a set of robust
definition languages, which can be used to extend and create grammars
and lexicons. Cypher programming is fun to learn and easy to use, and
the specifications are designed to allow a novice to quickly and easily
build transcoders for processing highly complex sentences and phrases
of any natural language, and to cover any vocabulary.

The free software and related documentation can be found at:

http://cypher.monrai.com

Enjoy,
sherman

Odd PR dispersion Gerhard Buergmann 14:03:53
At one of my sites - http://www.pointinger.com/ - the PR distribution is
completely different to normal sites:
The home page has PR 2, the next page in the main menu has PR 0 and
all other pages of the main menu and of the sub menus have PR 4.
Nearly all incoming links are pointing to the domain name.
All pages are apporx. 5 month old, the domain exists for many years.

How is this possible?

Thanks,
Gerhard

Natural Ranking Questions Guest 07:00:18
I'm really new to this e-commerce thing. I don't understand anything
about how to find good placement in the natural rankings. I have been
told that my website www.thelittlereddoor.net is written badly and that
my flash is useless and a problem. We are using GoogleAdwords just to
be found at all, but I need to know specifically what it is that is
wrong so that I can deal with it myself or specifically tell my web
designer what is wrong. I am also now reading that I should have links
leading to my site? What is that? How do I do it? Please help, I am
pretty desperate at this point. Thanks

I've been helping a company try to move up the Orgainc Results for one
of their sites. The site is http://www.militaryschool.us on July14
ago they were in position #139 then on July 21 they were in 132 (I've
been making slow changes to avoid being sandboxed) However today they
don't show up at all.

I'm not sure what has happended. I also not sure what my next move
is. Any help would be accepted gratefully.

Is this what's been gobbling up all my psters bandwidth? Big Bill 04:02:43
My posters site is down till tomorrow, exceeded bandwidth twice this
month, first time I bought another gig and a few days later it was
gone too so I thought I'd investigate before putting it back up again
(it goes back up tomorrow automatically).

What's this, do you think?

pool-64-223-102-9.burl.east.verizon.net

because it wasn't there last month and this month it's made nearly 50%
of the hits.

Google says hits are coming from Google Images, lots and lots of them.
My Linkin Park posters are very popular, as are the japanese
traditional art prints and the erotic photography prints.

However, in the keywords section of Analytics, it says that only a
handful of times have pages been found on keywords. So, how are they
found, then?

I installed a swicki, I should point out, so maybe that's it. Maybe
that's where the traffic was coming from in some strange manner. I've
now uninstalled it. We'll have to wait and see.

SEO Chain Gangs - revised version 2.01b Canadafred 03:24:52
 Allo' monde!
.1
... SEO chain gangs in mass production lines; "This unit forms
keyphrase skeletons and that sector over there inserts chunks of meat.
To the left is the fission and release chamber where the various skins
are glued onto the web pages and then the seedlings are propelled into
the SERPs to grow the little green line ... the little money pods all
blush at the master's sudden attention and float away to distant
fertile lands ...
.2
I revised a list and wanted to open it up for scrutiny.

The seven most important factors I consider when developing and
implemeting an SEO startegy:

1.0 Relevancy - stay focused but not pushy

2.0 Ethics - play fair, by the rules and have respect for competitors

3.0 Authoritativeness - having something uniquely significant to offer
the Internet

4.0 Dynamicability - encouraging evolution

5.0 Credibility - supporting words both internally and externally

6.0 Importance - using natural language patterns to emphasize content

7.0 Accessibility - building optimized content for your visitors
primarily (I will convert Els, slowly)
.3
I just keep telling myself "I am a man and I can change" like Red Green
used to suggest before his TV show got bumped off the air) see:
http://www.redgreen.com/
.4
That's the end of the posting. The rest is just babbling. Please,
everyone now get back to work.
.5
Ok, in a little way, I am hoping my latest blog article will be enough
to get nominated for the "2006 Obscure SEOs of Canada Distinguished
Moose Tird Award". I have a picture of me with mine from last year,
I'll post it up on my blog later if I can find it.
.6
For those search optimizers that are extremely bored and are looking to
plant new seeds in their minds and think that there may be an inkling
of substance in my assorted nonsense. I hope I just cured your boredom
blues.
.7
Obscurity, I think, is an extreme of imagination wherein innovativeness
sometimes festers.

I am trying to find a graphic/picture

how some share information.

I have seen this before but can not find it now.

I am probobly using the wrong search terms.

I looked on Search engine Watch and could not find
any info.

What I remember seeing before was
a graphic with boxes representing the engines and arrows
showing how they were connected.

Information overload; addressing too much outdated information on the Internet. Noticedtrends 22:50:30
Difficulties in filtering search-engine results to yield up-to-date
content.

Phrase to find "Internet trends" "July * 2006" (month, date,
year) content posted within last three-months: (about 700 results)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=m3&q=%22internet+trend%22+%22july+2006%22&as_qdr=m3&btnG=Search

To narrow-down search-results (much) further:

The words HE, SHE, ME are excluded (the 'without the words' feature
in advanced search form). After all, content which can signal current
trends usually doesn't contain HE, SHE, ME. Certain pronouns usually
indicate personal accounts of individuals; rather than the
"collective conscious" shaping current trends.

(Less than 50 results)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=m3&q=%22internet+trend%22+%22july+2006%22+-he+-she+-me&as_qdr=m3&btnG=Search

Searches still need to be narrowed-down further; as most search results
don't include current month.

Descriptions of results within search-results mostly include three
bolded periods '...' which indicates two different parts of
content; where the date searches are separate from the keyword
searches; yielding outdated content.

Are there search-engine utilities to allow omission of search-results
containing the three bolded periods '...'?

Google not filtering duplicates - still Logician 12:52:54
Today I was looking for NDE (near death experiences) information, and
as I searched Google I saw the SAME articles, I mean exactly the same,
time and time again in the Google Top 10.

eg

http://science.krishna.org/Articles/2000/10/00189.html
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/986177.stm

This are just examples, but I saw the excessive duplication a lot all
in Google's Top 10.

Clearly, Google is still not looking at content, but links to content -
what a joke. Sometimes you have to scroll through 3 pages just to find
something original.

Regarding news articles, probably a massive amount is just duplication
- I mean exactly the same article just reprinted under different names.
This is because news outlets uses AP.

Google testing New AdWords image ad size? John A . 12:47:42
I just spotted a tiny l'il 110x90px image ad in one of the four Google
ad spots on a web site out in the wild. Intrigued, I logged into my
ads and tried creating a new image ad. No such size was being offered
or shown on the image ad sample page.

I know for sure it's legit and not some overlay by the hosting page.
I'll leave out the actual file name so they don't get hammered, but
the image source was from
http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/verticals/110/

Has anyone been approached to test this new size?

BTW - there was no text on the ad image at all. Just a silhouette,
apparently of a native american, sitting in front of a sunset/rise.

Google Submission Gasprey 00:05:37
I submitted my website about six days ago to Google and it isn't listed
yet, how long does it take these days and is there a sure fire way to
speed it up?

I read somewhere that adding Google Adsense would get it on the search
engine much faster, a couple days I thought I read, but it still isn't
up.
