| Can some one give me a tip.... (re Google rank) Ts@Ebitmanagement.Se 11:24:58 |
| | Hello.
I have now got my webpage www.ebitmanagement.se listed in all major searchengines, listed in dmoz and variuos catalogues on the internet. (so the number of inkoming links is building up)
But i still have parge-rank 0 on the site.
Can someone give "easy" and "understandable" tips of how to proceed to start to increase the rank on goole ?
Thanks from sweden // Timo Söderlund

| Link Page Protocol Chas 07:33:21 |
| | As previously discussed in Looking For Links post I have been working on adding external links to my website and am now trying to determine if Googlebots prefer external links to be opened in "SAME PAGE" or is link to a "NEW PAGE" acceptable (which I would prefer) ?
Would appreciate feedback on this topic to continue my SERP education.
Thanks, Chas

| Google Delivers Different Results Guest 07:15:10 |
| | I have a website for a unique word it was #1 on Google, MSN and Yahoo.
Then I checked it from my house, it's still #1 for MSN and Yahoo.
But it's completely gone from Google.
Even when I put in the http://example.com
Nothing came up. So then I went to work and tried and there it is #1 on Google. So I tried it from a friend who has Comcast high speed, and the library which has a T1 line. Again I went home and it was number 1
So I tried it with my dial up Webtv. Nothing is coming back on Google. I have dial up MSN for my computer. Nothing there for Google.
Now WebTv is owned by MSN
I am assuming it's different data centers, but it's odd how the two MSN owned dial ups nothing comes up.
Is this unusual? Just wondering

| The Search Works makes record losses Tacila 22:44:36 |
| | Hiya,
This will give some of us heart and hope. It's hard running a web design firm and offer SEO services and make a profit. You really have to offer SEO or all your work will go to your competitors. SEO takes so much time and is so hit-and-miss it is really hard to do it and do it profitably.
I was checking the latest SEO news and found this -> http://alicat.newsvine.com/_news/2006/08/06/314487-big-money-for-a-record-loss-maker-the-search-works-doesnt-it
It looks like The Search Works can't do this either. They struggle to make that profit and offer SEO. The article itself describes why/if people might still want to buy the company and reference http://www.realbusiness.co.uk/Default.aspx?ChannelID=3213&loc=rb for the stats.
If The Search Works can't get their biz model right then no wonder I find it hard!

| Is Google loosing sitemaps? Borek 22:22:41 |

"We do not know about all the pages of your site. You can submit a Sitemap to tell us more about your site."
I was sure there is properly working sitemap so I logged to the Google sitemaps - and lo, three sitemaps for three different sites were submitted, none is present right now. Sitemaps were fetched by G last time about mid-July, three weeks ago. No idea what happened, the only thing I am sure about is - I have not deleted sitemaps, even accidentally, as I have not logged to sitemaps account for many weeks. Not to mention the fact that I was not at home at the time.
You all better check you logs - is it only my isolated problem, or is it some new Google bug? (err... feature?)

| What Is The Script Code Where Website Shows Search Engine Keyword Typed? Zennie Abraham 18:07:51 |
| | I've noticed that if I type a certain keyword in a search engine like Google, depending on that keyword, the first website that comes up contains exactly that keyword, sometimes even if the site itself isn't relevant to the keyword.
Does anyone know the script code for that? I'm sure it's around as this happens too many times.
Thanks.

| Letters of Apology Criteria Canadafred 16:21:15 |
| | Your letters of apology will be well-crafted, worthy of being content quality should you ever attempt to ruin my career again. Your letters will CLEARLY indicate that you pre-judged me based on flimsy data derived from your SEO intuitiveness skills and that your malicious attack at my integrity was what you once thought was in the best interest of the SEO community. Finally, you must somehow convince the readers that you are sincere, as I reserve the right to use your letters of apology as content to demonstrate when you get out of line, to show the innocent your history of bad judgment in the SEO community. This will undoubtedly stop you from ever doing this again to anyone else in this SEO circle.
You are in check. If you have a desperation move or have devised yet another, let it show itself now. Otherwise, capitulate.

| optimizing dynamic pages Vegas-real-estate-kid 11:35:14 |
| | Hey yawl -
I have tried to do something to give me an advantage in the ultra competitive online real estate market. Before I tell you my efforts I first have to give you a little insight to the industry.
All real estate listings, homes for sale, are electronically reported to the regions local MLS (multiple listing service.) This provides one central database for realtors to search for listings for their clients. It also now allows for brokers to display each others listings on the web, (use to be illegal)
So, every Tom agent is displaying dynamic pages of all listings on their sites. The problem is that the engines dont index the pages because they always have a dynamic url like http://domain.com/htm?state=NV&city=Las%20Vegas&hometypes[]=1
So we tried to create more static url's and incorporate some of the key phrases into it. For example, if a consumer views a property over 1 million the words luxury home are added to the url. Here is an example, http://www.summerlin-las-vegas-real-estate.com/Red-Rock-Country-Club/luxury-home/498913.reml?search=08aaa3bbecf0c708d5bf578cf440f2ba&
The problem is that this has given me zero results. The pages still do not get indexed. There are plenty of internal links leading to these dynamic pages, that stay current for an average of 2 months, but still no luck.
Any suggestions on how to get these to count as content? There are literally thousands of them so to find a way to get them indexed means the gold medal.

| Ebaynational Scooter 01:27:23 |
| | Speaking of no shame, self advertising... The all new http://www.ebaynational.com Free Photo Classified Ads website , which is in no way affiliated with the ever popular eBay (auctions web-site). Ebaynational provides sellers and consumers a place to connect via Free and Featured photo ads online. There is a submission upload center, and the site features search technology that can connect buyer and seller interests both nationally and locally (your town and state) by category. New and used items are accepted. Retailers are also welcome to list sales from their local chains. Whether it's new, used, or the equivalent of an onLine garage sale, you can obtain price comparisons in a Buy Now format as provided by the actual sellers of any listed items on a per category basis, and respond first hand to sellers right then and there. What else is new? The Ebaynational Resource Directory, of course. Private contact (anti-spambot) email response system in place. Basically an onLine ordering system with Buy it Now buttons and Website promotion to boot. There are even categories for singles ads. Not to mention categorical reviews for practically everything that is bought and sold under the sun. Ebaynational includes the optional Content pages for advertisers with featured ads. Content pages and seller websites are linked with search results. Ebaynational provides a free wheel for creative layout on content pages among those who know a little html/web design and development. Although, knowledge of web design is not necessary to produce an exceptional layout for your sale - just type it in and Ebaynational does the rest! For pics and layouts, Make An Offer buttons and buyer buttons galore with extendable reviews on site to promote further sales online, here we are. The concepts are simplistic as well as user friendly, with big, bold, colorful ads that compliment the all around aethstetically pleasing site. Even I place ads on Ebaynational from time to time, and recommend this small but growing site for further review. Last but not least, there is a place for webmasters to obtain reciprocal link exchanges for their website in the Resource Directory (a Free Service). Thank you!

"There's a growing body of evidence to suggest that pages that correctly validate will rank higher than similar pages that don't."
Would you care to show a little of this growing evidence?
Also this-
"Validation will give you cleaner, faster, quicker-downloading pages that the search engines will love."
Is poorly worded, since you can quite easily create a monster page filled with countless useless tags that validates and take a user on dial up quite sometime to download. Validation per se does not give "cleaner, faster, quicker-downloading pages that the search engines will love".

| NEWBIE ALERT: Where should I define the keywords for my site Marcus 00:54:47 |
| | I have read that the HTML "keyword" tag is not used by search engines that much nowadays. What does this mean? It seems like I should define my keywords elsewhere then, but where and how? Do I do this in HTML or do I type my keywords directly in some search engine facility? I have started reading a lot about SEO, but I can not use anything of what I learn until I know how to define my keywords!
please help!!

| Opinions on custom 404 pages Glenn - USAEyes . org 21:54:13 |
| | It seems that a custom 404 page would make the website user's experience more productive on those occasions when a link is outdated or a URL is inaccurately typed.
What affect, if any, does a custom 404 page with .htaccess redirect have on search engine optimization? What effect would a custom 404 page have on the Google Webmaster Tools (formerly SiteMaps) reporting?

| Advice on Natural Language Search Guest 17:47:36 |
| | Hi all,
I'm developing a location-based search engine for a few New York neighborhoods and was hoping that I could get some advice on natural language processing. Specifically, I'd like to figure out how to answers questions like these:
1) "Where can I find the best pizza on the Upper West Side?" For questions like this one, I would like the engine to respond by searching for Upper West Side restaurants that users have rated highly for their pizza.
2) "Where do I go to have fun this weekend?" With questions like these, I would like the engine to use more questions to figure out what the user wants to do to prepare (e.g. "Do you want movie recommendations?" "Do you want restaurant recommendations?"). Once the user answers a few of these questions, the engine could give him specific recommendations. ("Yes? Well, here's where this movie is playing in your neighborhood").
In both cases, the engine has to identify natural language patterns for questions. It should also be able to process more technical search query methods.
Anyone who wants more details or would like to give implementation suggestions can contact me at jbo25@columbia.edu
Thanks, John

| Search Marketing experiment SEMer 16:59:15 |
| | Hi guys.
For all those in SEM and SEO, there is a website you will find interesting. It was launched by 'e-channel' (http://www.e-channel.com.au), an Australia search engine marketing company.
'Tuesday Island' (http://www.tuesdayisland.com) is a new hotel accommodation website. While other travel sites are spending between $10,000 and $500,000 per month on search engine marketing, Tuesday Island has no initial advertising budget.
Tuesday Island is a real life experiment in Search Engine Marketing, the purpose of which is to determine if it is possible for a website to grow and be successful with no initial advertising budget.
All information about the site, its progress and its SEM strategies will be made available in monthly reports for those who are interested. The website is: 'www.tuesdayisland.com/experiment' (http://www.tuesdayisland.com/experiment).
The site has been up and available on the web since May 1 2006. So far, Tuesday Island has made $22 profit.

| Printer friendly pages - sort of Duplicate content . . . . ? Sky High 06:35:52 |
| | Hi Group, I have recently put up a site and Internet Explorer sucks when it comes to making things "printer friendly" by default. Of course, you can always do fit to page easily in firefox, and with IE, but the customer wanted print-friendly by default.
So I shrunk the header graphic size and compressed the margins and made seperate pages with a link to them from the other page. I guess Printer-Friendly seems to be an ongoing issue reading various websites.
My question is, I had to do a link to a 'printer-friendly' page for each page (7 in total) which isn't bad, but wonder how I can get round stopping them getting penalised as 'duplicate' by the search engines - or won't it matter ?
Hope you can give some pointers, I'm a bit baffled at the moment.
Thanks everyone!
Best Regards, Paul

Got sidetracked with another critical project but have finally refocused on website and put SERP'S at the top of priority list.
Is anyone familiar with the PR Prowler software www.prprowler.com to generate links ?
Would appreciate feedback on same and any other suggestions for obtaining relevant links. We manufacture / sell high end leathergoods and if possible would like to obtain links of related caliber.
