| SE Saturation Guest 20:43:41 |
| | How does it work out that a web site's saturation is much greater than the number of pages it has?
Thanks in advance

| Boolean query algorithms Sherrie Laraurens 17:48:44 |
| | Hi all,
I have a question relating to how search engines and (in fact anything else that supports boolean queries) manage to do such things so efficiently.
my question involves a query were you would like to retrieve the all the documents in your corpus that have the words "Cat" and "Bat" in them and that they not only contain both words but that they must be consecutive for example "Bat Cat"
I can think of a very crude way of doing this which involves hashing every word in a document into a hash table and storing an index for said document , then in the query stage to hash both words (hash join) get the intersection vector of the resulting vectors from the hashing process, then one by one examine each document from the intersection vector find the word "Bat" and see if the word "Cat" is the next word if it is place said document into the final result vector and once finished pass back to user.
I believe this will work for AND and OR type queries but I can't imagine systems like google or yahoo using such a CRUDE method nor can i see them caching such results, just because the sheer amount of combinations things they would have to be caching.
Does anyone here have any idea on how these things are done? any keywords I could use to google etc..
Sherrie

| Advice needed for site Clint 15:52:52 |
| | I started my first website in September of 2004 where I got about 1,600 unique visitors per month. Since then with some SEO (many tips from this newsgroup), articles, pay per click advertising, blogging and reciprocal linking, I'm up to about 12,000 uniques visitors per month now. I've recently adopted videos and free eBooks in order to boost traffic. The free eBooks are getting lots of potential e-mail addresses so I definitely hope to make use of a list. Many of my key phrases and words are putting my site in the top two pages of the SEs. So I was able to stop the pay per click completely now. However, I don't know if given this time frame, if this is a reasonable amount of growth in traffic or if I should be at a higher level.
A problem I'm really having is with conversion. If the average conversion rate is around 1% for websites, I should be getting about 120 orders per month. My average is more like 1 order per week. Then again, my business is an online art gallery which might suggest that conversions are expected to be lower in this product area. But somehow, I feel I should be doing better.
The answers are not really coming out at me so I'm hoping that some of you more knowledgeable folks could take a peek at my present website and tell me if there's any obvious flaws in either SEO or design which is resulting in such a low conversion.
My website is at http://www.FreeSpiritGallery.ca
Thanks
Clint

| Difference ranking in MSN, Yahoo, Google ? Lazy Pig 05:04:38 |
| | Hi everyone !
I have a question to ask. In the last few months, i noticed the difference amount of hits from difference search engines for my site (new site - google ranking 0). Initially, I got most of the hits come from google, then msn, and some for yahoo. However, after adding more content to the difference pages, msn gives me the most hits for my site. Hits come from google is nearly 0 and same for yahoo.
Has anybody here experienced anything like this ? If you have, what would be your strategy to improve your site ranking in google and yahoo ? What are the big difference in ranking algorithms from google, yahoo, and msn ?
I wonder my site is still in "google sandbag" ? (coz my site has google ranking = 0)
Thank you, Lazy Pig

| Page not indexed? Paul Zhao 22:26:17 |
| | http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/realestate/site_index.html
It's linked from the bottom of all Real Estate section pages in washingtonpost.com, using anchor text "Site Map". The majority of the real estate section pages are indexed, why wouldn't this page be? Shouldn't search engine spiders follow the "Site Map" links on any of those pages and get to it?
It's not a new page, it's been there for a while. The strange thing is that it's not indexed by any of the major search engines. Is there anything that's preventing that page from being indexed?
Thanks, --Paul.

| Google not showing Organic results Peter 14:00:10 |
| | Since past few months I have been wandering why I am being thrown to some filthy sites showing nothing but commercial ads or some message to join or order/ purchase products. Recently a friend of mine told me that when he tried to search for Test material for his Management entrance exam what he got are some sites selling test material and advertising to join their online courses for the exam and at last, sick and tired, when he couldn't get some free material he went to book shop for buying some books for same.
This isn't just one story about Search engines' miserable behavior since past few months. Google, after its few updates in couple of years got deviated so much from what it has been known and used mostly in world i.e. Relevant, Natural or Organic Results and best thing was commercial free results, no selling on Results but what these Florida etc. updates brought to google are more commercialization less relevancy in results for user in short what update defined to me is more to Google in terms of profit and less to Users/ searchers in terms of information.
Organic Spam (http://www.organicspam.com) is what this phenomenon is known to be, finding way perpetually in the name of online marketing and internet marketing users are just not getting the very first benefit of internet that is getting most relevant information. Websites that are in existence as MFA (Made for Adsense) are fast making place in top results of Search engines sadly they are Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. which are widely used by most of the population of the world.

| My search engine echoes previous searches. Strange Creature 10:26:57 |
| | Often when I do internet searches I will tend to get hits that echo previous searches that I have done and previous sites that I have visited, along with an array of parallel advertisements.
When I do searches I do not necessesarily want to see sites that I have seen before, or echoes of previous searches, but wish to find new things.
What can I do to stop this? Is it a matter of constantly deleting cookies, or should I do other things as well?

| Linking from directories Mogga 10:26:57 |
| | All the time I hear people saying you should get links from directories as these will help your site in google.
I've got a huge list of directories I could submit to and many of these are zero PR.
Is it worth getting links from these? Or should I look for other factors too - and if so what are these factors?
Is it really a case of all links are good? Or all non recip links are good? -- Get away from it all http://www.travelfreebies.co.uk/thomson-holidays.htm Late deals, mega cheap flights and bargains
