| | I just read an article about "how deep into your site are the spiders crawling?". In this article, he mentioned a software named Robot Manager Pro, and said it's a great and helpful tool for creating robots.txt and monitoring spider activity. Here's the link of the article: http://www.searchengineworkshops.com/articles/robot-manager.html
I was wondering if anybody has used this before. Are there any other tools you'd like to share with me? Thanks.

| Estimating "pay per click" e.g., Adsense revenues. Noticedtrends 03:56:33 |
| | What are good estimates of monthly revenue received through "pay-per-click" or "pay per thousand clicks" e.g., Google Adsense through a new blog that is aimed at semi-specialty to semi-general audiences that provide content on emerging trends e.g., developments in economic, career, social, technological, and consumer products and services trends?
Obviously, rough estimates of revenue are difficult to discern; yet the content in this proposed blog may actually do a good-job in spotting emerging trends e.g., the closest thing to a "crystal-ball."

| Offering content in different formats Timmermans 18:32:20 |
| | I have some doubts about all the talk about duplicate content. Surely there must be a threshold, but how many times can content be duplicated? I ask this because I'm thinking about offering content in different formats. So for example, would one get a penalty when using the same content in say a html and pdf file? Does a PDA version of a site trigger a duplicate content filter? What about print versions of content?
The above question refers to unique content on a single site. But most likely them duplicate content rules apply to RSS feeds as well. Is there harm in providing/using syndicated content?

| Page indexed with most recent update and then reverted!!? Guest 18:59:57 |
| | Hi
I have a website at www.yardsaledb.com. So initially I did all the web development on a subdomain of another website...and then i simply registered the domain name and then used masked domain forwarding for ppl to get to my page - bad bad idea.
i quickly realized google bot was only crawling to the page that is held at the domain which contained nothing except masked domain fowarding, this does 1000x damage to my site ranking, site content (google bot doesnt see any) and i couldnt do any SEO. So i quickly changed the name server, re-did the sites with proper links and now its not doing domain fwd anymore.
Here is the question, if u search yardsaledb on google, the first link returned is my page, but cached at Jun 28. I waited patiently and checked sitemaps and finally on Jul 5, google bot accesses my page and updates it to the current website (no fwd). I was happy, all my keywords and SEO tricks are goin to be put to use now. UNTIL couple days ago, i checked sitemaps it says last accessed Jun 28!!!!????? then i go to google search and behold, its back to the site it had crawled in Jun 28....wtf???? it had the most updated version and then it reverted? what gives?

В» E-Mail В» Print В» Discuss В» Del.icio.us В» Digg Websense Uses Google To Identify Web Sites Bearing Malware
Google recently began indexing the executable files found on Web sites. Websense now searches for specific strings within those files, such as identifiers known to be used by popular malware packers.
By Gregg Keizer TechWeb.com
Jul 11, 2006 07:04 PM
Security researchers at Websense have figured out how to use Google's search engine to sniff out thousands of malicious Web sites, including legitimate URLS hacked by intruders, and root out new forms of malware, the company said Tuesday.
Google recently began indexing the executable files it finds on Web sites, said Dan Hubbard, Websense senior director of security, and his San Diego-based researchers have created a toolset that lets them automatically search for specific strings within those files, such as identifiers known to be used by popular malware packers.
"Google indexes binary files, and we were able to come up with queries that look for certain strings, some of which are very specific, in Windows executables generated by packers," explained Hubbard.
By combining the Google search API with some homebrewed tools, Websense researchers automated the discovery process and uncovered more than 2,000 malicious Web sites. About 10 to 15 percent of those, said Hubbard, were legitimate sites that had been hacked and so were hosting predatory .exe files. It's Websense's policy, however, not to publicly disclose compromised sites.
The team also uncovered evidence of here-to-fore unknown attack code.
"We also found previously-undetected malcode," Hubbard said, that included new Trojan horses, unknown variants of the Bagel and Mytob worms, and malware writing toolkits. "It's been a lot of help."
Websense won't publish the toolset it created to Google for malware, but Hubbard said he plans to "roll up a bunch of the tools and share them with other security researchers."
Google's indexing of binary file contents shouldn't be considered a large threat, it is evidence of the trend toward Web sites storing and then distributing hostile code.
"Sure, there's a downside to this," said Hubbard. "Malware writers, if they figured out how to do this, could [search for and] download malcode from multiple sites, maybe even see what kind of strings they should put in, or not put in, their binaries."
Search engines have been harnessed by attackers before. In 2004 and 2005, for example, the creator of several MyDoom variants used Google, Yahoo, and other engines to find victims' e-mail addresses. Two years ago, a MyDoom worm generated enough traffic in e-mail queries to slow down the search site.

| Indexed but out of date cache Weeble 13:42:24 |
| | Hi,
I have created a website for our company at www.premiercarsystems.co.uk. It's quite a new site which is still under construction (hence current lack of pictures). I've got it all validated, sitemaps done and submitted, robots.txt done and submitted. I've put in keywords (apparently this works for yahoo) and descriptions.
However it's not being properly crawled by google and the cache is way out of date (although uses the current css background?).
I'm working on getting good backlinks, however we are far too stingy to pay for these (apart from the one at www.alarmsandsecurity.net/vehicle/buckinghamshire.php due to it being indexed) and I refuse to do any business with anyone who cold calls the shop to sell us these.
We are currently paying for Google adwords to keep us in the top searches whilst I'm working on the freebie search.
Any ideas on why this hasn't been recached? Am I just being impatient or do I need to get many more backlinks?
Also, although it validates, it does appear slightly different in Firefox. If I inserted a bit of code e.g. javascript to add a bit of spacing to the appearence for Firefox browsers would this have much of an impact on the googlebots?
I'm new to website optimisation so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Weeble #CC6699 Hat SEO

| How would you categorize our website for directory sites? PhilB 06:20:56 |
| | I am about to start the process of submitting our website to various directory sites in order to generate more inbound links. The problem is that our business does not fit neatly into the preset directory categories (at least, not the ones that I've found so far).
I would be grateful for opinions regarding the best category to be listed under. Please visit our site at www.pocket-tours.com. As you'll see, we develop self-guided tours using Pocket PCs. Our target customers would include museums, historic sites, castles, tourist attractions, tour operators, etc.
Using the dmoz directory site as an example, we could submit our URL in a sub-category under Business:Hospitality:Travel, but the sub-categories include items like "Consulting", "Resources", and "Software". Although our business touches on each of those areas, we would really like to see a category like "Tour Development". Perhaps I am looking under the wrong major headings. Again, any suggestions or ideas are welcome.
Best Regards,
-- PhilB
