For deployment it's easier if you can merge an external web.xml file with the one deployed inside the WAR. With the provided patches you can set an "external descriptor" pointing to another web.xml that gets merged just as the webdefaults.xml and the web.xml inside the WAR.

Patches for jetty5 and jetty6 are attached.
