| Quick Launch problem -Nisko- 17:59:30 |
| | Frequently enough, I lose my QuickLaunch icons (all of them). Can someone tell me where the setting is to restore them (from a backup)? I have over 140 icons and reconstructing them is a royal nuisance. If I could restore just that part from a backup, life would be a lot simpler. Thanks.......

| Safest long terms archival media? Kaptain Apokalypse 16:46:46 |
| | Hello everyone. This is my first post to the NG so apologies if this has already been covered. I did a quick search here and didn't find anything similar.
I wonder what this group's views are on the best long-term data storage media is? In my particular case I would like to archive digital images and documents, of which I have many thousands of.
I suppose the cheapest and easiest way to archive data is CD/DVD however I do not know how reliable such media would be over a period of say 20+ years. Is this dependant on the quality of the CD/DVD media, or is CD/DVD not a reliable long term storage solution? What about USB memory sticks? The 2 gigabyte sticks are fairly cheap at the moment, but do they offer a safe and long-lasting storage solution?
Your advice would be appreciated as would any suggestions for more reliable data storage methods.
Mike.

| Overclocking with a Stock HP Motherboard? Anonymous 16:09:01 |
| | Hi Folks,
I have an HP Pavilion ze4325us laptop; of course, since it's a complete package type system, the bios does not have any overclocking settings. The system has an AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2000+ chip and I'd like to overclock it without buying a new motherboard, power supply, memory, case, etc. Is there something mechanical that I can do to the motherboard (solder and wires) or some software way to overclock this chip with my current hardware?
Thanks!

| Macro-Op fusion does not work in 64-bit mode YKhan 09:41:26 |
| | "The thing is though, while MOF may be touted as the best thing since sliced bread, it does not cause many performance problems when it is off. It appears that the bottleneck in the CPU is not in that aspect of the pipeline, so its loss has little speed impact. More on this when the testing is complete." http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33347
Macro-op Fusion was one of the big hype items of the Conroe/Merom/Woodcrest. This feature is supposed to be one of the things giving Intel it's edge over AMD in the performance wars. Now it turns out that it doesn't even work in 64-bit mode. But apparently it's no big deal. Most of us have already figured out that the real secret behind CMW is its big L2 cache, but Intel downplayed that. So Intel can't have it both ways, either MOF is important, and Intel will have to explain why it isn't available when in 64-bit mode and why CMW is crippled in that mode? Or MOF isn't important, and Intel has to admit that it's all due the cache.

| Core 2 Duo PC keeps shutting down itself after 2 seconds and booting up nonstop Guest 04:17:20 |
| | Turn machine on, CPU fan spins, No beep, No signal to monitor, 2 seconds later, Turns off itself, 2 seconds of silence, Boots itself up again, 2 seconds later, Turns off itself, Repeat, Repeat, etc.
What could be the problem? Motherboard or CPU?
NOTE: It worked when I first booted the machine after building it, went into BIOS, checked temps, etc.

| What's a good working temperature for laptop HD? Yousuf Khan 04:05:49 |
| | On one of my laptops, I'm seeing hard disk temperatures ranging from 48-52C, as measured by MobileMeter. Disk is a 100G Fujitsu MVH2100AH. I've downloaded the specs PDF for it, and it talks about ambient operating temperature of 5-55C (ambient), or 5-60C (disk enclosure surface). I'm not sure if the hard drive sitting inside a laptop is the same as operating inside a disk enclosure. But the temperature seems too close to be comfortable in either case.

| Intel's future graphics tech is PowerVR Air Raid 03:56:36 |
| |
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33318
(slightly edited from Inq's original post)
Intel's future graphics tech is PowerVR
Shader-like SGX licensed
Friday 28 July 2006
INTEL'S NEW graphics offering is on the way and, as we expected, it'll be based on the on/off PowerVR architecture.
Intel licensed Imaginations Technologies' SGX programmable Shader core architecture and is using it in its G965. These boards and the graphics capability inside are expected to arrive shortly and they will be Vista premium ready.
Intel prevailed in its fight to achieve Vista premium compatibility and is able to finally wave goodbye to ATI's entry-level chipset. Intel simply doesn't need it any more.
So some next-generation Intel graphics - possibly even the discrete graphic will certainly be Imagination Technologies' PowerVR based.
The next one is Muse, actually stands for Media Unified Shading Engine and is the way to use more of the SGX cores in parallel and make a powerful devices, even the multi-pipeline graphic core.
We expect Intel PowerVR offerings to be introduced certainly towards the middle of the next year - if not even earlier.

| no sound - problem with motherboard MarcinR 03:41:55 |
| | Hello
I have problem: there is no sound from my SB Audigy 2 Value.
Here I describe how it happened. I was trying to install a new cooler on my Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT (Pentagram Freezone XC-70 Al+). It wasn't easy, because it doesn't fit exactly to my hardware (but the manual of that cooler says it does...
. (Maybe it's because my motherboard. The problem is that the radiator touches the PCI bus, that is near AGP and Radeon can't be inserted properly).
Ok, I've tried several times to insert Radeon in AGP slot, and finally I took off that cooler and installed another one. Then I've spotted that there is no sound, even noise in speakers when they are turned on. It can't be a software problem because there is no sound under Windows XP and Linux both since the same time.
Speakers work, I've checked on the other source. Sound card works, I've checked it in another PC. PCI works because network card is working all the time.
The question is: could I destroy something on the motherboard, that doesn't interrupt network card's work, but make that problems with PCI sound? I've also tried to install my AC'97 sound card integrated with motherboard but it seems to doesn't work too.
And at last, a small tip: there is a small cut (0.5 mm x 2 mm) on the motherboard near the PCI bus, nearest the AGP. Probably I've made it with screwdriver when I was trying to install that cooler Can it be the source of the problem?
Sorry for my bad english :]

| GA-M59SLI-S5 won't boot Matt Casella 01:25:47 |
| | Here's my setup, everything is "new" ordered from newegg
Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 motherboard AMD64 x2 4600+ Apevia (Aspire) X-Plorer ATX APEVIA (ASPIRE) X-Plorer ATXB8KLW-AL/ 420W Power Supply 2 GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM 800
I've plugged in the 24 pin main power connector, but it seems my power supply only has a 4 pin 12v. Do I need to buy a 4 to 8 pin adapter? Or a new power supply (I kind of have the feeling now that 420W might seem kinda small for my setup).
Other than that, is there any easy way that I can tell whether the problem is in the PSU or if the motherboard was DOA?? All I can say is that I feel the motherboard start to get warm when everything is plugged in. No LCD, fans, or any beeps, etc when I turn on the power. I was planning on buying a DMM, but don't have one right now.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

| ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Wont Boot or Beep Colin Steadman 01:25:31 |
| | I've just bought a ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 and a AMD 939 4400+ X2 processor. I've taken out my old mobo and processor from my PC and installed the new ones. I then took the memory out of the old mobo and stuck it in the AsRock and installed the graphics card (and of course the mobo power, speaker and case panel leads ect).
This should have been enough to boot, however when I powered it up nothing happened. The case, cpu and graphics card fans all spin up so the mobo is getting power. However I dont get anything on the monitor or any beeps on the speaker.
The mobo manual does not have a trouble shooting section so I dont know what to try next. Could anyone suggest what may be the problem or what I could do to diagnose it?
TIA,
Colin

| ASUS / Pentium D overheating & other problems DustWolf 00:57:28 |
| | Hello,
I got here a brand new system with Pentium D (2core) 3 GHz and ASUS motherboard (P5LD2, intel chipset) / graphic card (NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT).
The system was originaly shipped here with a broken PSU, outdated BIOS and no fans short of the CPU one. I've added a rear 12 cm fan sucking air out (with a spin regulator set so it's not too noisy), got the PSU replaced, updated the BIOS, and later added an extra 9 cm fan to blow cold air towards the CPU fan and memory chips from outside.
I am testing the computer in regulated temperature environment at a stable 23В°C.
The thing is... 1. The ASUS hardware monitoring software always crashes if started at bootup (and occasionally inbetween too) I updated the BIOS and the ASUS software to fix that, but most of the crash-situations remain (the monitoring software starts running really slow, like one window update per minute, and End Task doesn't make it go away). Also, with this new P5LD2 BIOS from the ASUS website, the "System Monitor" area in the BIOS doesn't work anymore (tho the Windows-based monitoring software works a bit better). 2. When the computer comes back from being idle a long time, the taskbar area is black and doesn't redraw unless clicked upon. 3. The motherboard temperature is 40В°C... it was 46В°C before I installed the extra 9 cm fan. 4. The CPU idle temperature is 50В°C ... 60В°C before I installed the extra 9 cm fan and it skyrockets if the CPU is in use. This is while Not using the ASUS AI NOS feature or otherwise overclocking the CPU.
Is all of this normal / to be expected?
The ASUS PC Probe || monitoring software declares the motherboard over 45В°C and CPU over 60В°C as warning temperatures. Is this reasonable?
I would like to bring down the temperature of the CPU to something that wouldn't cause all off the alarms going off durring normal usage, however I already installed all the possible fans around it. What can I do to bring down it's temperature further?

| Why two of each? Wes Stebbins 23:44:37 |
| | have a brand new IS7-V2 (Intel i848P-ICH5) 1.0 Abit motherboard., with Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 08/17/2004 BIOS. It has a 2.9 Celeron processor, a Western Digital WD400JB-00ETA0 40 GB hard drive, a generic IDE DVD-ROM 16X drive and a TDK CDRW241040B CD R/W drive, and a 3.5" floppy drive.
I have the TDK Burner and the DVD on IDE 2 on the motherboard, and only the Hard Drive on IDE 1.
The problem is in hardware devices in control panel, I apparrently have two each of the following:
Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers Primary IDE Channel [Controller] Primary IDE Channel [Controller] Secondary IDE Channel [Controller] Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]
Everytime I try to right-click on every one of the above (not just one representative of each) and Uninstall, then after I'm done (with all 6) I reboot, the duplicates still always show up. IT always reinstalls all 6 everytime when detecting new hardware after rebooting.
Any insight on this would be beneficial.

| MB Recommendation Please No Thanks 23:43:53 |
| | I'm hoping to pick some of your brains. I've currently got an FX-55 with a couple of gigs of RAM and that is coupled with an X1900XTX PE that will soon have a companion crossfire edition X1900. I know I'll be upgrading the CPU down the road (probably next year sometime) but was wondering what MB currently available is good for me with expansion possibilities for the future. I'll probably be looking for a dual core compatible board. Suggestions? Thanks!

I was happy with my LG 4163 DVD burner. It used to take about 12-13 minutes to burn a DVD at 4x speed. I burned around 350 DVDs. All of a sudden it started to take about 35 minutes to burn a DVD at 4x speed. What happened? The laser is getting weaker?
Thank you in advance, Mike
