Tasks requiring FDD... ? Martin D . Pay 16:10:20
 Gentles...

If you have a system with a decidedly dodgy FDD (or indeed a
system with no FDD at all) is there any way of carrying out
certain tasks that traditionally have always needed doing from
FDD?

I'm thinking specifically here of:-

a) flashing the motherboard BIOS

b) loading RAID drivers on a new build system

I'm shortly to start building a new system (something I haven't
done for a few years now) and I know the only FDD I have (I mean,
who uses floppies these days?) is flaky. This is not an ideal
thing when flashing a BIOS!

The RAID question isn't quite so important as I won't be going
over to a RAID configuration just yet (I need to buy a pair of
matching SATA II HDDs first) but I would be interested in any
answers to the question nonetheless!

Thanks in advance to those folks out there who know more about
this stuff than I do!

Martin D. Pay
Looking forward to replacing his 4 year old system with something
that can play the new Doom!

Power requirements Darius 15:19:20
I'm trying to build a machine from scratch for the first time, but am
having trouble deciding on what type of power requirement and hence power
supply I need to get. Obviously the less the better for energy costs in the
long run.

Motherboard: Asus M2N SLI Delux
Processor: AMD 64x 4200+

Max 3 HDD's, average graphics card (nothing fancy for gaming), two optical
drives, and of course, all the USB stuff - not all running at the same
time.

Anyone help with this?

Thanks

Darius

ATI vs Nvidia motherboards? Guest 07:41:47
 Hi guys,

Im working on my first build here, and I have a pretty simple question
but I would still like it explained to me. I was looking at [asus]
motherboards and I noticed that there are different types of
northbridges for different motherboards, nvidia specific and ATI
specific. I was wondering what would happen if I were to plug in an
ATI card into a SLi specific board; or vice versa, a geforce in a
crossfire board. They are both PCI express, so I know that they will
"fit" in any of these motherboards, but I know it cant be as simple
as putting a square peg in a square hole when they specifically tell
you which video card works best.

thanks

newegg signs u up for a 1 yr subs to PC Mag??! Guest 07:30:55
I ordered a DVD burner on newegg today. At the last step of checkout
it said....
<snip>
"Included with your purchase is a 1-year subscription to PC Magazine
(or Electronic Gaming Monthly) -- a $9.97 value. You will receive 1
year of PC Magazine with no obligation to continue. If you do not
agree to receive this offer, you have the option to request a refund
of the subscription value. Accepting this offer will not affect the
price you pay at checkout. Limit 1 subscription per household."

[Check box]

"I agree to receive this offer and to have Newegg.com provide my
information to Ziff Davis Media."
<snip>

I didn't check the checkbox. The 9.97 was not included in the amount
charged to me.. Now the question is this. How does this work? Did
newegg send my billing info to PC Mag and they will charge me in 1yrs
time.. Or did they charge me already.. If not what is this refund
request
about? Has anyone gone through this before?

Anybody have a graphics tablet they don't want? Destron 06:09:53
 Hey -

I'm in desperate need of a graphics tablet and I can't really afford
one right now. If anybody has one that they don't want anymore or is
just going to throw out, maybe we can arrange something for me to take
it off your hands. I don't care about brands, I just need one.

Replacing CMOS Battery Jack Gillis 04:32:40
My machine is roughly 6 years old and I expect to have to replace the CMOS
battery one of these days. Can someone tell me approximately how long I have
after I remove the old battery until I put the new one in without losing the
CMOS settings? On an old, old machine with the box type battery, I had a
few minutes to change it out. Is the same true with the current type?

Thank you very much.

Quantum SDLT 320 & AHA 2940UW Configuration Help Please Jellyman5264 02:24:31
 Hi
I was able to get a used Quantum SDLT 320 external drive and I would
appreciate some help with the configuration. I purchased a used AHA
2940UW to work with the drive. (I know that I should have bought a
better one, but that was all they had "used" at the store)
The problem that I have is that I do not have any idea what the correct

settings on the AHA-2940 should be. There are many settings in the SCSI

Select utility.

I am using the terminator that came with the drive and a SCSI III cable

The tape does back up, but very slow and seems to write for a second or

two, pauses then writes again. (almost in small bursts

The last backup (using Windows Backup) that was attempted indicated
that it would take over 3 hours to back up 40 Gb ?

I have used a cleaning cartridge on the drive and using new media

Quantum tech support was little help..saying to call Adaptec who will
not even accept e-mails as the product is out of warranty ???

Thanks for your help

Cordless or Bluetooth? Bobby 01:10:23
I am about to buy a keyboard and mouse for my Windows Media Center PC in the
living room and I was wondering whether I should buy a cordless keyboard and
mouse or a Bluetooth one.

What is the range for a cordless device? I know that the Bluetooth devices
can reach 10 metres (about 11 yards) so that range is fine - but is cordless
OK or will I have to place them near the transmitter/receiver?

Cheers.

Creating bootable CDs with Nero Bobby 00:20:33
I have downloaded a CD ROM image which consists of two files - a .CUE file
and a .BIN file.

The disk is meant to be bootable but I can't used the CD I created to boot
my PC.

When I try, my PC tries to boot from the CD (I set the order this way) but
just hangs with a blank screen.

What have I done wrong? How do I burn a bootable image?

Cheers.

Clone Drive Does Not Have All The Bytes BobN 22:24:57
I am running Windows XP Home SP2.

My C: drive is a WD, EIDE, 20Gb, single partition, FAT 32 containing some 8
Gb of data.

The clone drive is as above in an external enclosure connected through the
USB port.

I usually clone the C: drive about once a month using Retrospect Express.
No errors are reported. By chance, I compared the two drives and found
that the clone drive contains only some 6 Gb of data. I do not know where
the other bytes are. I notice that the clone drive has no "My Documents"
folder or Recycle Bin, neither of which contains more than a few Mb of data
on my C: drive. All the other folders and files seem to be there, but I am
coming up short 2 Gb.

Can anyone provide an explanation?

TIA

With existing RAID, how to jumper extra IDE drives? Andrew J . Rozsa 22:23:00
I am starting with 865PEDAP MoBo and a SATA RAID already installed and
functioning properly. The RAID is connected via PCI SATA Adapter. The
system is booting on the RAID (OS is XP-SP2). I am adding drives from
previous system. These are ATA IDE drives. If I leave the RAID alone,
how do I jumper the additional IDE drives (drives 3 & 4)? The 2 IDE
drives are 10-pin drives so they can be set to Dual Slave. Also, on
the MoBo one of the IDE connectors is red and the other is white. Any
significance to the color? Does it matter which do I plug where? A
floppy drive is already connected to the red IDE connector.

Sure would appreciate help with this. My son is "inheriting" the old
Dell and is nagging me to death to finish the "homebrew project."
Best,

Andrew

Latest news on AMD price cuts? Guest 20:36:52
Anyone know what's the latest on AMDs rumoured price cuts? Are they
going to be on July 28th after the Conroe officially launches? [And
therefore probably won't be noticable to us until August at earliest
:-( ]

I ask because I'm helping someone assemble a new comp. It's only for
Office work and the internet so will probably just be a Sempron so
unlikely to make that much difference in any case but just wondering
how things are going. Actually I am considering a Pentium D 805 because
as much as I dislike Intel and as crappy as the Pentium D is, this
doesn't change the fact that the average users doesn't ever see or need
the performance anyway but the advantages of dual core, especially with
Windows' sometimes crappy thread management may be be noticeable. But
it's a bit expensive and I expect extremely light usage in any case so
I'd probably just end up sticking with the Sempron

Cheers

Overclocking Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego ASrock 939 DualSata MB Hachiroku 20:07:38
 Hey:

I bought the ASRock DualSata MoBo so I could use my memory and my new AGP
card.
However, overclocking is not a strong point of this board. The OC
Capabilities are limited.
I am able to run nice and stable at 2.75GHz from a 2.4GHz CPU, but my past
experience
with AMD is that this is the minimum that can be achieved! This chip should
be able to
reach 3.0GHz without wheezing.

The board has limited OC capabilites; the settings for DRAM are Normal
(2.5v) and High (2.7v)
You can adjust the 'FSB' (Hyperthreading on the Athlon 64) at 200, 400, 600,
800 & 1000 MHz
You can also clock the memory at 133, 166 and 200 MHz.

I am running Kingston HyperX PC3500 capable of 434MHz, (2-3-3-7-1T) and I
had it running at a total
transfer rate of 2.021GB/S!!! But, it only ran on MemTest booted off a SUSE
Linux install disk, any Real
World OS booting froze up either at boot or shortly after. I can achieve
2.75GHz Stable at a memory rate
of 1.75GB/S. It's fast, but I should be able to go higher on the CPU Speed.

Also, I am running a Stock AMD fan, with another fan 'crosscutting' the
heatsink; after 4 hours
last night, even with the Cool 'n Quiet diabled the CPU was only running at
38Degrees C/100 F.

ANy ideas how to at least get this to 2.8GHz?

Thanks!

Damaged to cpu? Dan 19:16:41
I managed to pull a AMD64 s939 cpu out of its socket without releasing the
lever on the side of the socket! After a thorough examination it seems to
be ok (no missing/bent pins) but, apart from actually plugging it in to
another mobo, is it possible that it will still work?

Dan

(i should add that the power was off - of course! :D )
