24/7 rated 2.5" laptop hard disk GRios 00:18:55
 Dear friends,

right now, i am having to build a small system that shall provide
firewall service for a local network. This computer is a specialized
box that support 2.5" laptop hard disks. Since, it will be running
nonstop, i am in need to buy a 2.5" 44 pin IDE ATA 100 hard disk for
such task. But i have a hard requirement: this disk must be rated 24/7
operation.

I have heard of two device: HITACHI E7K100 and E5K100. Other
brands/models are welcomed.

The prime question: where can i find a honest/reliable reseller that
deliver worlwide.

Thanks a lot for your time and cooperation.

Best regards.

Performance with two drives on the same SATA controller. Fj 00:11:47
Is it correct that a SATA controller has the same limitation as a PATA
controller with two drives? I.e., the controller can only handle data flow
to one drive at a time?
So, for example, creating a RAID 0 array on two SATA drives on the same
controller will impact the performance of the array? [vs creating the array
with two drives on different controllers].

Thanks

Promise TX4000- two striped drives a goner or.... Fotoobscura 23:21:42
 Hi.

I have a Promise TX4000 and had a drive that went dark (intentionally,
unplugged) for a few months. One day I went into the bios and noticed
I only had one drive and remember I unplugged it. I had also since
removed the drive.

Here's the dumb part:

Forgetting this wasn't a mirrored array for some reason I "initialized"
or maybe better put "made online" but did NOT format one of the two
drives in the stripe. I did *not* do anything, at least knowingly that
would hurt anything. No to all "are you sure you want to do this?"
sort of thing.

I then realised the err in my ways and plugged the second drive in. I
went back into the Promise BIOS and noticed both drives recognized as
striped and the right size. I booted into Windows and went to computer
manager to "mount" it. It was there but was acting as if both drives
were empty and unformatted.

This means, obviously, I did something stupid.

The question is- the data on both drives is technically still there but
of course written across separate disks in 64byte blocks. Is there a
way to "save" this stripe or rebuild the MBR for the stripe so I can
get this data back?

It seems to me that even a program like Ontrack to recover data (raw,
formatted, etc) may not work if it doesn't recognize the stripe.
Without recognizing the stripe I presume Ontrack will not know that
64bytes is on one drive, 64 on the other (or so I believe the striping
works).

I have a feeling that i'm not SOL providing I can re-create the stripe.
It seems to me that because the striping is a reoccurring process that
you can infer the stripe that needs to "span" the files on the drive.

So, before I wipe the two drives and make a new stripe and let things
fall as they may, can anyone suggest a way to recover this lost stripe?

Thanks for all info.

p.s. and no I don't have a backup but its not end-of-the-world if I
lose the data. (hence the stripe in the first place) :)

Western Digital My Book 250 - formatting in XP Guest 22:36:34
I have a Western Digital My Book 250 GB external harddrive connected
via USB 2.0 to an XP SP2 system. It came formatted via FAT32 from the
vendor with a footnote in the instruction manual that I might want to
re-format it in NTFS mode.

This is the second drive I purchased, the first had to be returned
before 30 days were up due to numerous problems shown in the event
viewer and the fact that the drive would disapper and I had to reboot
to get it back. I re-formatted this 1st drive as NTFS which seemed to
make it much faster, but I wonder was this the cause of my problems.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Intel to open-source its graphics drivers Yousuf Khan 21:50:25
It seems that Intel and AMD are so competitive with each other that they
even come up with the same thoughts at the same time. Now that's
hyper-competition. AMD was musing about this too just a few days ago
about ATI's drivers.

Computer Headaches Adam Leinss 19:20:06
 Hi guys.

I recently installed a watercooling kit from Danger Den that leaked
coolant all over my motherboard and adapter cards. This kit kept
leaking, so I pulled it all out. In the process of trying to remove
the waterblock from the CPU, I bent the pins off the CPU. So I went to
Newegg and ordered another CPU chip (P4-478-3GHZ). Put the chip in and
powered the system on...only powers on for 2 seconds and shuts off.
Narrowed the problem down to being the motherboard so I ordered a new
Asus P4S800D-X from Newegg.

Got the system all together last night and booted it up...worked great
for 3 hours and then the video all went to hell. I updated the video
drivers and once I rebooted the system never POSTed again. Grabbed
another AGP card from my other system and it booted just fine. I figure
the coolant burned this card out as well (it is a Asus 128 MB 9280S AGP
card).

So....I went to CompUSA this morning and got a cheap Geforce 5200FX AGP
card, 128MB. Throw in it my machine and it will POST ok. However,
when it gets past the BIOS I get either a "Out of Range" message, a
black system (system doesn't boot) or the graphics are all distorted.
I put this 5200FX AGP card into my other system and it works fine. I
took the 64MB Geforce2 card and placed it into my system and it works
fine?!?! However, it is no where as crisp as my other card as I was
hooking it up via DVI and now I'm using VGA.

Any ideas? BIOS appears to be flashed to the latest version.

Aopen ax6bc r2.59& 250GB harddisk Paul 15:11:52
 I have a question: Can I connect a 250GB harddisk to my Aopen ax6bc
motherboard flashed to 2.59 & Award Bios 4.60 PGMA?
On the Aopen site they say that harddisks larger than 136GB are supported
since release 2.41. ("Supports IDE detection of HDD size over 136GB")
Is there another limit after the 136GB limit?
Does anyopen had any experience with this setup?

Unable to format a hard disk, is it dead? Guest 09:33:33
 Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious problem with my hard disk drive (20 Gb, brand
Maxtor). Recently I made several things on it, like installing Ubuntu
4.01 Warty (with Grub as bootloader), removing Ubuntu, partitioning it
using FreeFDISK from a boot diskette and so on. But right now, I can't
format it. The formatting correctly begins, but around 15% I get the
message ''Not ready'' (in fact, ''non pret'' in French) and the
formatting process aborts. I tried to make several partitions in order
to isolate this location, but it seems that there are other places with
the same problem.

Windows Millenium refuses to install, explaining that the formatting
doesn't work. My question is: What could be the origin of the problem ?
Can I save the hard disk, and if it's possible could you please explain
how?

Right now, the only solution I found to post this message is to boot
from the live CD of Ubuntu and to post from Google...

Transfer data from thinkpad to external drive Menefreghista 01:08:57
I want to use my external USB E Drive (80GB-no OS on it) to store all
uneccesary data from my 20GB notebook drive (the TP's drive is full). I
would like to get everything not needed on the Thinkpad over there. I
use the TP on a docking station as a PC, very seldom do I move it. Is
there a better way than dragging and dropping all of these folders? Not
to mention I have no idea which ones must stay on the TP's HD.
The external HD already has some data on it (pics-files etc).
I am using W2KPro.......

undetected harddrive in win xp Richie2k5 00:21:03
my brother tried downloading an upgrade for his Norton Security
software on his win xp, which has expired. but was then told to
install something thats missing which linked him to the Microsoft
Website. once he downloaded it his computer crached. now his BIOS
does not recognize his harddrive. each time he restarts the memory
count runs but then pauses for sometime, but then coutinues as:

Detecting IDE drives....
Primary master: none
primary slave: none

The screen then moves normal. then the screen says:

Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Disk Boot Failure,
insert system disk and press enter.

I swapped the hard drive with one that has win xp, and then the OS
opens to it's desktop. i know now the harddrive controller is good.

I restarted the computer with the win xp cd, and tried going into the
repair windows option srceen to see if it can see the hard drive. the
screen showed:

Setup didnot find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

My brother haven't backup any of his inportant files in over a month,
and doesnot want to lose them. is it possible to bring back this hard
drive alive .

thanx for any help in advance.

Try a different benchmark.
I also know that the spec for USB2.0 480Mbps, but not> really sure how to read different benchmark speed I get!?

Either the benchmark is having a massive brain fart
or there is something seriously wrong somewhere.
But can anybody confirm that a USB 2.0 writing-speed> on 1.1Mb/s is what I could expect,

No its not, it should be a hell of a lot better than that.
or is there anything wrong here??

Yep.

which ram to Conroe overclock? Jakob Harder 20:53:22
I'm receivin a E6300 Core 2 Duo ans an ASUS P5B next week.

How fast does the ram have to be to reach modest (not high because I don't
want a very noisy cooling setup) overclocking results.

Can I pick up som cheap G.Skill PC5400 ram or does it have to be PC6400 ?
I'm not up to date on how the ram "follows" the cpu when overclocking on
this setup (my present is an old AMD Athlon setup).

And, by the way, anyone have links to an easy overclocking guide for conroe?

Problem adding new SATA Controller Paul 20:09:55
 Hi Guys

Having run out of space on my main SATA RAID drives I decided to add a new,
much larger drive - also a SATA.

I want to keep the original configuration but *simply* add a new drive.

My motherboard (ASUS A7N8X-E) is home for the original RAID drives and has
only two SATA connectors so I have bought a PCI SATA card for the new
drive - the card is a Promise SATA300 TX2+, the new disk is a Maxtor
Diamondmax 250Gb.

Now, I have installed the drive and the card and get problems as follows:

If I power up the drive and connect it to the card I get a message from the
new controller card during the boot sequence saying 'IDE Bus Enabled' and
then nothing, it just hangs.

If I try booting without the disk attached to the card I get a message 'No
device is found, BIOS is not installed' and then it hangs.

As I can't get as far as Windows XP loading, I have not yet installed any
drivers that came with the card - do you think I need to do this first?

Is there something I'm missing? The controller card is supposed to be PnP so
I thought this would be simple........

Any help would be very gratefully received - thanks in advance!

Paul
