| Transfer data from thinkpad to external drive Menefreghista 01:08:57 |
| | I want to use my external USB E Drive (80GB-no OS on it) to store all uneccesary data from my 20GB notebook drive (the TP's drive is full). I would like to get everything not needed on the Thinkpad over there. I use the TP on a docking station as a PC, very seldom do I move it. Is there a better way than dragging and dropping all of these folders? Not to mention I have no idea which ones must stay on the TP's HD. The external HD already has some data on it (pics-files etc). I am using W2KPro.......

| undetected harddrive in win xp Richie2k5 00:21:03 |
| | my brother tried downloading an upgrade for his Norton Security software on his win xp, which has expired. but was then told to install something thats missing which linked him to the Microsoft Website. once he downloaded it his computer crached. now his BIOS does not recognize his harddrive. each time he restarts the memory count runs but then pauses for sometime, but then coutinues as:
Detecting IDE drives.... Primary master: none primary slave: none
The screen then moves normal. then the screen says:
Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter.
I swapped the hard drive with one that has win xp, and then the OS opens to it's desktop. i know now the harddrive controller is good.
I restarted the computer with the win xp cd, and tried going into the repair windows option srceen to see if it can see the hard drive. the screen showed:
Setup didnot find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
My brother haven't backup any of his inportant files in over a month, and doesnot want to lose them. is it possible to bring back this hard drive alive .
thanx for any help in advance.

| which ram to Conroe overclock? Jakob Harder 20:53:22 |
| | I'm receivin a E6300 Core 2 Duo ans an ASUS P5B next week.
How fast does the ram have to be to reach modest (not high because I don't want a very noisy cooling setup) overclocking results.
Can I pick up som cheap G.Skill PC5400 ram or does it have to be PC6400 ? I'm not up to date on how the ram "follows" the cpu when overclocking on this setup (my present is an old AMD Athlon setup).
And, by the way, anyone have links to an easy overclocking guide for conroe?

| Problem adding new SATA Controller Paul 20:09:55 |
| | Hi Guys
Having run out of space on my main SATA RAID drives I decided to add a new, much larger drive - also a SATA.
I want to keep the original configuration but *simply* add a new drive.
My motherboard (ASUS A7N8X-E) is home for the original RAID drives and has only two SATA connectors so I have bought a PCI SATA card for the new drive - the card is a Promise SATA300 TX2+, the new disk is a Maxtor Diamondmax 250Gb.
Now, I have installed the drive and the card and get problems as follows:
If I power up the drive and connect it to the card I get a message from the new controller card during the boot sequence saying 'IDE Bus Enabled' and then nothing, it just hangs.
If I try booting without the disk attached to the card I get a message 'No device is found, BIOS is not installed' and then it hangs.
As I can't get as far as Windows XP loading, I have not yet installed any drivers that came with the card - do you think I need to do this first?
Is there something I'm missing? The controller card is supposed to be PnP so I thought this would be simple........
Any help would be very gratefully received - thanks in advance!
Paul

| Viewsonic monitor image dissappears and doesn't come back Luch 19:55:41 |
| | I bought a ViewSonic VX710 monitor last year for use with my laptop, and it has worked fine, until just recently I started getting this big problem... After using it for a little while (30 minutes or so), the screen will go off/dark/black randomly. The screen display will then stay off. At anytime, if I cycle the laptop display to not send a signal to the monitor and then start sending again, the monitor will appear on, perfectly fine, for a full second, before going black again. Once in a while (the next day, etc), I can use it for a little bit (about 30 minutes), but then it goes black again randomly. But even when not working, if a cycle the signal, it will always turn on for a full second before going off again.
I've tried this now with more than one laptop as well. Same behaviour.
I e-mailed and called Viewsonic tech support. They couldn't figure out the problem, and since it is more than a year (July 17, 2005) since I bought it, I have to get it repaired myself.
My questions are: 1) Any advise what the issue can be? I don't believe it's any setting I can change, because I haven't changed anything and it worked fine for a year. 2) Am I better off getting it repaired or purchasing another. My inclination is to purchase a new one. 3) Is there a better quality brand than Viewsonic where I'm less likely to have this occur. I'm quite dissappointed because I paid almost $300 for this monitor.

| Is this PNY Geforce 6600 GT graphics card defective? Altcomphardware 19:27:30 |
| | I have an AMD XP 2500+, 1GB DDR333 RAM and a PNY Geforce 6600GT.
When I test out some games with it, the system either reboots, crashes to Windows or hangs. Occasionally artifacts are visible if a lot of light effects are present. Unfortunately, the screenshot button doesn't work in the game so I have not been able to save them. If you guys want to see it then let me know, I'll try to get it with a digital camera.
When I tried updating with the latest drivers, I couldn't even get into Windows - just a black screen. I had to use the "Last Known Working Configuration" to get in.
Is there a stress test I can download which will show if the card is faulty or not? IIRC although 3DMark stresses the graphics card, it doesn't do so for long, and it doesn't detect if artifacts are present. The results with 3D Mark were dismal, I got less than 1FPS for all the tests. Is this to be expected?

| SLOW Startup Ritter197 19:18:30 |
| | I need 143 seconds to start up windows xp pro. It used to take under 40 seconds.
Performance is otherwise ok and pitstop, com gives this desktop the highest rating I had ever (1724) for a 2.8 GHZ 1 GB Ram computer.
What causes this long time startup?

| scanners and dust Falco98 10:11:29 |
| | Ok, I have a scanner I'm pretty happy with overall (canon 8400F).. it's been a few weeks (maybe a few months) since i've used it, and just now I notice there are a few pieces of dust INSIDE the scan bed glass. Of course I haven't taken it apart or anything (one would figure they'd take greater steps to prevent this). My main question is: what, if anything, can be done about this?
Also, what have people found to be the best normal method by which to remove dust from the top of the glass? Any cloths / tissues I've tried usually deposit back more dust or fiber than they were employed to remove in the first place... I'm thinking of trying swiffer cloths or something, but i'd worry perhaps that something like that might have undesired effects (i.e. a residue or something).
Thanks for any thoughts... ~Mike

| Strange, picky booter Guest 10:04:13 |
| | First of all, this is a very possibly hosed system. A smart guy at my office "accidentally" kicked over his desktop. It is a Compaq EVO, 1.6 gb w/ 512 mb The hard drive was very toasted, and now I'm seeing if the system can be salvaged.
1. When I hook up a known good 10 gb Maxtor with WinXP(different from original) on primary IDE set as CS, the system POST's and immediately goes to a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. It will never boot the OS and jsut sits there, and the HD does not sound very active. It does the same if soley hooked to the secondary IDE as well. Tried setting it to Master in both configs, still not working.
2. The system will detect a bootable CD-Rom, and boot to it. Tried this with an XP OS cd, was even able to run the recovery console.
3. Installed a PCI IDE controller, disabled onboard controller, checked IRQ's.
4. When hooking up the 10gb HD, system POST's, controller detects HD, automatically reboots. The same happens when hooked to either the primary or secondary controller on the installed IDE controller.
5. Double checked that 10 gb hard drive still boots in another system.
6. All hope was lost, UNTIL I decided to hook up some other HD's, System successfully boots to a 7.5 gb Quantum Fireball with Windows ME (sorry), as well as a 6 gb Maxtor with Windows 95. EVERY TIME, on both the installed and onboard IDE controllers.
I have never had a system be picky about the OS, does it sound like the system is just hosed, or does anyone know an explanation of why the system refuses to boot an HD with XP?
Thank you for your assistance!
-Geoff

| Want to take apart Ext. Maxtor HDD Abd08 07:03:40 |
| | Hi All,
Got me 2 x 250gig OneTouch Maxtor external drives. The time has come to take apart the external enclosure, and use the drives in a RAID 1 config on a PC.
Anyhow, I really wanted to know if there was anything to be especially careful/aware of when doing this. My main paranoia is that once the case is off, the drives are going to have some kind of dodgy proprietary interface/power connectors!
Thanks!!! Rajiv

| Installed New Power Supply Gravitywell 06:36:23 |
| | I just got a new power supply for my newer computer (Amd) and installed it; turned it on: the keyboard numlock, caps lock, scroll lock leds on the keyboard lit for a couple seconds, nothing else happened- no fans (even the ps fan) started, or no bios start message or anything. Could this be a motherboard issue or is my new PS possibly bad?

| Changing CD/DVD. Windows shows empty drive? Noozer 05:56:27 |
| | I've seen this issue on a number of computers, and with different drives and different media...
Many times I'll change the disc in my DVD drive and Windows won't show me any files on the drive for the new disc. Sometimes if I eject and remove the disc, then close and open the drive, and reload the disc, it works.
Are drives just picky about the media they read, or is Windows just crappy at dealing with media changes?
Any fixes?

| boot manager for NTFS Craig 04:51:06 |
| | I've been using Boot Manager from from powerquest and its been working good with fat32 partitions, but now that all my partitions are ntfs even if I create a small fat32 partition it doesn't boot the other o/s. Does anyone know if the new boot manager/partition magic from symantec works with ntfs? I'd like something that didn't rely on fat32 partitions. Also I tried the emergency disk with boot manager and it was able to switch, I ended up having to restore my hd from an image.

| IBM's new memory latency reduction technology for Opterons Yousuf Khan 04:07:07 |

Turbo-charged memory and Opterons rev up IBM servers - Computing "IBM hopes to distinguish itself in Opteron servers through a patent-pending capability it calls Xcelerated Memory Technology that will boost memory access speeds by up to 15 percent over rivals, the firm claimed. “It’s like a turbo-charger for memory,” said Stuart McRae, IBM system marketing manager. “It gives us the full 128GB [RAM capacity] at the full 667MHz speed. Others will be restricted to four Dimms per CPU whereas we will have eight.”" http://www.computing.co.uk/itweek/news/2161520/turbo-charged-memory-opterons

| No POST Guest 02:17:50 |
| | Hi
Just wanted to check I hadnt missed something before I bin this. Machine powers up but doesnt POST. Monitor stays on standby, never wakes.
K6-233 cpu, 64M RAM. Pci video, onboard sound, serial mouse.
CMOS battery was 1.8v so renewed it. replaced ram, still no post checked psu lines, ok checked cables in connectors, all ok removed the only card, video card, still no post disconnected hdd, cdrw, looked for cmos reset on mobo, but oddly I'm pretty sure there isnt one. checked cpu seated ok
The DIMM RAM socket is a horror, takes major force to get RAM to seat in there, and looking at the design I'm surprised it ever worked. Tried each of the 2 sockets just in case.
Its due for the bin, just wanted to check I hadnt missed something. Thank you.

| Can't write to my CD drives except with Nero Matti Lamprhey 00:47:52 |
| | I've got a couple of optical drives on my Win XP Home system - the primary is a Ricoh DVD+RW MP5308D and the secondary a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR104. Since upgrading XP to SP 2 recently, I've been unable to write to these using anything other than Nero apps. It seems as if Windows thinks these drives are read-only now.
The app I'd like to use is SonicStage, which used to work fine. I've just installed the latest version from the Sony site, v4.0, but it hasn't fixed the problem. It can read CDs from the drives but doesn't recognize recordable discs in them when I try to write or erase. Nero, however, seems to have a completely accurate picture of the drives and their capabilities.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for tackling this problem!

| Recommendation for 16+ Port KVM Switch Will 00:32:51 |
| | Once upon a time, we had all of our rackmounted server room computers hooked into multiple Belkin eight-port KVM switches, and life was good (or at least tolerable). The customizable menu with names on it would periodically reset itself and lose all values, but at least we could switch from machine to machine. We have "upgraded" to the latest Belkin 16 port model, and it has been pure hell. The device is constantly having problem with keyboard or mouse (sometimes both) on at least 20% of the connected machines. We have tried new cables, and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Belkin replaced the switch, and the problem gets worse. I'm looking for recommendations for a new vendor, possibly a new architecture, for a large scale KVM solution for a server room.
My basic requirements are as follows:
1) Up to 32 computers, each of these controllable from two to four stations.
2) Any station can control any computer.
3) We should be able to run long distance, at least 100 feet, from the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the actual server.
4) Should allow us to identify easily each machine using a name we can assign to it and then read off the KVM switch on screen menu.
5) Should be incredibly *reliable*.
Perhaps a better solution would be one that puts the port selector right at the keyboard and mouse and monitor, then runs a multiplexed KVM signal over RJ-45 to a back end device that then attaches to each server. I'm open to any and all ideas on how to best accomplish the mission here.
