| PCI Video card on PCI Express motherboad? Tungley@Spamfree.Bellsouth.Net 03:20:47 |
| | Quick question -- If I buy a new motherboard which has PCI Express video (no AGP slot), will a regular PCI video card work in one of the other PCI slots as an alternative to using the PCI Express slot (i,e, will I get video)? I'm thinking of a way to avoid buying a new video card right away if I happen to buy a board with no onboard video and no AGP slot for my current card)
Thanks

| Manual Duplex Printing with a Brother Multifunction Printer Jack Gillis 03:20:35 |
| | I am thinking of buying a Brother MFC 210c, 420c or 640c multifunction printer. I now have a Brother HL 1440 Laser Printer and its driver has a manual duplex option which makes two sided printing a breeze. I have not been able to find out from the Brother on-line documentation whether the drivers for those printers offer the same type of manual duplex printing. Brother has not responded to my email question on the subject.
Can anyone here tell me if the feature is offered by the drivers for any of the printers?
Thank you.

| low disk space message in Windows ME Gerry Wolf 03:19:24 |

Defrag has been done, and various programs have been deleted, but it still gives the message, sometimes when the computer is just on with no activity.
Suggestions?

| WOL - setting ip address to forward to Guest 02:52:27 |
| | Im trying to get wake-on-lan to work, Ive enabled it in my motherboard. My NIC supports it and since the motherboard is PCI 2.2 compliant I *dont* have a cable running from the NIC's WOL connector to the motherboards WOL connector.
I know my NIC's MAC address.
In the router, I have selected to forward anything on PORT 9 (UDP), but the problem is it doesnt allow me to forward to a MAC address only to an IP address. Since the router automatically assigns a new ip address to the computer I want to wake, I dont know what the ip address will be. I can set my computer to a static ip address, but wont this cause a conflict with the dhcp of the router?
Alterantively, I can assign an aribitrary IP address in the router (within the local LAN IP range), but is there perhaps a default IP address in the NIC itself that needs to be used?? If so, how can I find my NICs IP address?
Im using this to test: http://stephan.mestrona.net/wol/ http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-gui.aspx
Thanks!

| Western Digital controller board Johnnyzero 00:36:42 |
| | I'm trying to resurrect a "dead" Western Digital 40gb drive in order to do some data recovery - it's a model WD400BB-00CLBO.
I was able to locate another controller board which has the exact same part number as the original (2060-001092-006), but it's from the 20gb "version" of the same drive - a WD200BB. When I install the new board, the drive will now spin-up, but I only get the continuous thrashing/clacking sound of the heads against the platters. I noticed that XP's Device Mangler recognizes the drive as a WD*200*BB, so I know that this is the problem.
Is there any way to make this board work with a WD400BB? Since it's the same exact WD part number, I was thinking that they're must be a way of configuring it for use with a 400 - perhaps a jumper, trace, or even a resistor that you can change. Or is the drive type permamantly stored in an EEPROM or whatever at the time of manufacture?
Any help will be MUCH appreciated. I can certainly buy another controller board from a WD400BB, but I'd prefer to be able to use this board if possible.
best, JohnB

| duplicate working devices in device manager Dave Xnet 00:31:45 |
| | Hello, just did an XP repair install to a Biostar 6100 M9 motherboard / AMD 64 3200+. It's an Nvidia chipset board.
I'm a little unfamliar with it, and there's a few things I noticed, one of them is duplicates in the device manager: http://home.comcast.net/~davetest/dm2.JPG
They're all working, according to device manager/ properties. Only one occurrence of the primary and secondary controller gives the active dma mode, the other says "not applicable"
However, all the general tabs say "this device is working properly"
Thanks for any enlightenment. Dave

Since, it will be running nonstop, i am in need to buy a 2.5" 44 pin IDE ATA 100 hard disk for such task. But i have a hard requirement: this disk must be rated 24/7 operation.
I have heard of two device: HITACHI E7K100 and E5K100. Other brands/models are welcomed.
The prime question: where can i find a honest/reliable reseller that deliver worlwide.
Thanks a lot for your time and cooperation.

| Performance with two drives on the same SATA controller. Fj 00:11:47 |
| | Is it correct that a SATA controller has the same limitation as a PATA controller with two drives? I.e., the controller can only handle data flow to one drive at a time? So, for example, creating a RAID 0 array on two SATA drives on the same controller will impact the performance of the array? [vs creating the array with two drives on different controllers].
Thanks

| Promise TX4000- two striped drives a goner or.... Fotoobscura 23:21:42 |
| | Hi.
I have a Promise TX4000 and had a drive that went dark (intentionally, unplugged) for a few months. One day I went into the bios and noticed I only had one drive and remember I unplugged it. I had also since removed the drive.
Here's the dumb part:
Forgetting this wasn't a mirrored array for some reason I "initialized" or maybe better put "made online" but did NOT format one of the two drives in the stripe. I did *not* do anything, at least knowingly that would hurt anything. No to all "are you sure you want to do this?" sort of thing.
I then realised the err in my ways and plugged the second drive in. I went back into the Promise BIOS and noticed both drives recognized as striped and the right size. I booted into Windows and went to computer manager to "mount" it. It was there but was acting as if both drives were empty and unformatted.
This means, obviously, I did something stupid.
The question is- the data on both drives is technically still there but of course written across separate disks in 64byte blocks. Is there a way to "save" this stripe or rebuild the MBR for the stripe so I can get this data back?
It seems to me that even a program like Ontrack to recover data (raw, formatted, etc) may not work if it doesn't recognize the stripe. Without recognizing the stripe I presume Ontrack will not know that 64bytes is on one drive, 64 on the other (or so I believe the striping works).
I have a feeling that i'm not SOL providing I can re-create the stripe. It seems to me that because the striping is a reoccurring process that you can infer the stripe that needs to "span" the files on the drive.
So, before I wipe the two drives and make a new stripe and let things fall as they may, can anyone suggest a way to recover this lost stripe?
Thanks for all info.
p.s. and no I don't have a backup but its not end-of-the-world if I lose the data. (hence the stripe in the first place)

| Western Digital My Book 250 - formatting in XP Guest 22:36:34 |
| | I have a Western Digital My Book 250 GB external harddrive connected via USB 2.0 to an XP SP2 system. It came formatted via FAT32 from the vendor with a footnote in the instruction manual that I might want to re-format it in NTFS mode.
This is the second drive I purchased, the first had to be returned before 30 days were up due to numerous problems shown in the event viewer and the fact that the drive would disapper and I had to reboot to get it back. I re-formatted this 1st drive as NTFS which seemed to make it much faster, but I wonder was this the cause of my problems.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

| Any other way to recover a HDD which is freezing the system? Spinrite says it will take 584 hours! Jonathan 21:43:01 |
| | Dead Maxtor HDD. Powermax confirms it can see it, says there's drive error. Oddly, SMART reports OK. But I have only been able to get tools to see this drive by booting PC, then removing cable from HDD *just* after the POST beep, then reconnecting cable as soon as CD spins. Otherwise, the HDD activity light stays on and nothing happens.
Spinrite wants 584 hours (584 hours = 3.47619048 weeks - thanks google!) and counting, Disk Commander freezes for 10 minutes at a time.
Is there any more "rough and ready" recovery tool? The data isn't valuable enough to pay Ј100's to a specialist firm, but we'd like as much of it back as possible for historical reasons!
Chkdsk strangely doesn't see the drive, nor does fdsk or indeed anything except spinrite and Disk Commander, mainly because it seems the drive doesn't have a letter. However, I CAN see correctly named directories and files, in amongst the guff, via some browsing (but not recovering) tool.
Thanks

| Computer Headaches Adam Leinss 19:20:06 |
| | Hi guys.
I recently installed a watercooling kit from Danger Den that leaked coolant all over my motherboard and adapter cards. This kit kept leaking, so I pulled it all out. In the process of trying to remove the waterblock from the CPU, I bent the pins off the CPU. So I went to Newegg and ordered another CPU chip (P4-478-3GHZ). Put the chip in and powered the system on...only powers on for 2 seconds and shuts off. Narrowed the problem down to being the motherboard so I ordered a new Asus P4S800D-X from Newegg.
Got the system all together last night and booted it up...worked great for 3 hours and then the video all went to hell. I updated the video drivers and once I rebooted the system never POSTed again. Grabbed another AGP card from my other system and it booted just fine. I figure the coolant burned this card out as well (it is a Asus 128 MB 9280S AGP card).
So....I went to CompUSA this morning and got a cheap Geforce 5200FX AGP card, 128MB. Throw in it my machine and it will POST ok. However, when it gets past the BIOS I get either a "Out of Range" message, a black system (system doesn't boot) or the graphics are all distorted. I put this 5200FX AGP card into my other system and it works fine. I took the 64MB Geforce2 card and placed it into my system and it works fine?!?! However, it is no where as crisp as my other card as I was hooking it up via DVI and now I'm using VGA.
Any ideas? BIOS appears to be flashed to the latest version.
Adam

| Unable to format a hard disk, is it dead? Guest 09:33:33 |
| | Hi everyone,
I'm having a serious problem with my hard disk drive (20 Gb, brand Maxtor). Recently I made several things on it, like installing Ubuntu 4.01 Warty (with Grub as bootloader), removing Ubuntu, partitioning it using FreeFDISK from a boot diskette and so on. But right now, I can't format it. The formatting correctly begins, but around 15% I get the message ''Not ready'' (in fact, ''non pret'' in French) and the formatting process aborts. I tried to make several partitions in order to isolate this location, but it seems that there are other places with the same problem.
Windows Millenium refuses to install, explaining that the formatting doesn't work. My question is: What could be the origin of the problem ? Can I save the hard disk, and if it's possible could you please explain how?
Right now, the only solution I found to post this message is to boot from the live CD of Ubuntu and to post from Google...

fwiw, i clearly have something on my Win XP SP2 machine.
i noticed it 2 weeks ago (during a 100GB d/l day via dial-up modem)
and again this past weekend
which got me around (finally) to using a h/w router (that i bought 18 months ago but never got around to using it)
for the moment, the router has saved the day

i've yet to do an update with microsoft for XP SP2. i mean, the whole thing has looked beyond daunting to me
any suggestions on how to *best*
(without screwing everything up, and with minimizing future update download volume and times) will be VERY much appreciated!!
thank you in advance, bill

| Help me keep this drive working long enough to rescue data from it... Brian Kendig 01:32:21 |
| | I've got a Seagate ST3200822AS SATA drive in an HP Media Center PC m1170n. The drive's controller is ailing - when the drive works it works slowly, but after it's in use for one or two minutes it suddenly disappears from the bus, and the PC can no longer detect it (not even in the BIOS menus) until I power off / power on. I've tried this drive in two different PCs, and it has the same symptoms in each.
It's infuriating to have it work long enough for me to see the contents of the drive, but not long enough for me to copy them off...
What's especially maddening is that when I boot from the SeaTools (Seagate diagnostics) CD, it analyzes the drive for an hour or more, and the drive remains online throughout. So I know the drive is capable of working; I just don't know why it works for the diagnostics but not for me!
I've tried setting PIO and DMA to their lowest settings, in the hopes that maybe slowing down the data transfer rate would keep the drive from going offline, but that hasn't worked.
I could use some ideas on this. Anyone have any suggestions on things I could try to nurse the drive along long enough to pull data off it?
