when burning DVDs using nero 6.6.0.1 the burning seems to take an absolute age, I have an 8 speed write and 4 speed media and it is taking an age 50 minutes plus. The buffer level of the drive is bouncing around continuously from 80% to 0% and the computer buffer seems to randomly either stay at full or grind right down to 0.
The system is completely idle otherwise.
The verification seems to work fine, taking only 10 minutes or so for a full 4.7gig HD

I have good news and some bad news. The good news is that you burner is working properly as far as the buffer underrun is concerned. The bad news is that you are having buffer underruns. It may be wise to remove the CD-Burner because it is running on ATA 2 and the DVD-Burner likes ATA 4. While I don't have a problem with mixing devices on my system (my hdd runs at full speed even though the Zip is PIO mode 0 or original IDE). Another Alternative is to put the DVD ROM in an external IDE enclosure and plug it into a USB 2 port. It won't work on a 1.1 because it will only be able to transfer at 5/9x. Remember 1x DVD equals 9x CD. Also, if you have not done a defrag for a long time, that could be your problem.

Agreed! That happened to me too. Use an 80 conductor IDE cable if you have>one.>

I changed a rounded ATA 133 cable for a flat 80 pin cable, moved it from the raid card to the motherboard and put it on its own on the channel (the text file was out of date) and it seems to be fine now....
