| Serial ATA power connector Mike 21:10:30 |
| | I am confused about the Serail ATA power connector for hard drives I seems to me that there are two sata power types, A real sata connector, and an adapted type.
I noticed that a sata hard drive has a different looking power connector than the one for the old style (Molex). And I have been reading some articles that show a different Pinout for Sata. It shows an extra 3.3 volt tap. But if you use a Molex to sata adapter you do not get the 3.3. volt source. Yet the sata drive still functions ok. I have even seen a good many power supplies that do not have a true sata setup, just adapted off the Molex leads Why does sata have the extra power wires, if they are not needed ? Or have I missed something ?
Thanks for your advice Mike

| Low Voltage from the Central Air Crashes My Computer JRoughgarden 19:21:30 |
| | When our A/C comes on, it pulls a lot of power. The lights dim momentarily, but all the computers in the house weather it fine, except one: my homemade Asus 2.67 GHz dual-proc system.
I purchased a Belkin UPS and an APC Line-R voltage regulator. I can see the indicator light on the APC regulator show low voltage on occasion when the AC is on. But bottom line is that the APC device cannot make up for the problem.
Does anyone think the problem is in the power supply on this computer? If so, is there a model or type that could withstand the voltage drops better? I can't recall the output of my current model, but I do recall searching for a quiet one with adequate margin. Would a very much oversized model do any better?
Any advice is much appreciated.

| USB troubles Ricky Romaya 06:40:46 |
| | Grrrrr, I have nothing but endless problems here. I have setup successfully, without any hassle, Canon i255 printer. After that, I disconnect the USB printer cable from the printer, but leave it attached to the USB port. While I'm writing the vendor about my graphic adapter problems in win98se, my win2k suddenly crash with endless beep on the pc speaker. I tried to reboot, but unsuccessfull, then reset button to the rescue.
After reboot, at the point where the system info box displayed (just before entering OS selection menu) there are beeps on the pc speaker. Then I found out that the keytboard isn't working. The beeps are several fast beeps (couldn't count, too fast), a pause, then a single beep. I remove the USB cable, then things are working normal again.
The USB port used is the one on the backpanel which is built onto the mobo. I tried to switch port (the one directly on top of it, if the mobo is laid down) and the same problem occurs. Strangely, if I connect the cable to the ports on the extra backpanel (the one which attached to the mobo by cables), the problem doesn't occur. I haven't tried to print from that port yet.
2 additional things I've noticed. Even if I disable the USB controller (from the BIOS), and attached the cable to the ports on the backpanel which built onto the mobo, the problem persists.
Another, If I attached the cable, on any available USB ports, there are now noticable delays in power up, specifically, between when I push the power button and when the power kicks in. Before this problem, it's almost simultaneous, even with the cable attached.
Plz Help TIA

| Problem with PCMCIA 4 USB ports card P 15:10:09 |
| | Hi, I bought a pcmcia card with 4 usb, but I have this problem: On my Celeron 650mhz notebook with windows xp, I plugged it, windows recognized it and it works well. On my pentium 150mhz MMX notebook that does not have any usb port (it's a Siemens Scenic mobile 700) with windows ME, I plugged it, but windows didn't see it. I tried installing drivers but nothing. In the hardware list nothing is changed, there isn't neither any ? yellow item nor usb devices with a ! . I also tried to connect a usb LED lamp to these ports and it didn't turn on. The only thing I am sure that the pcmcia slot on the notebook are good, because if I connect a LAN card or a modem they works well. What could I do? Please help me, thank you, bye.

| SDR SDRAM advice needed Bernhard Hortens 15:46:41 |
| | Hello there!
I have recently bought some 512 MB SDRAM sticks, using 8x Samsung K4S511632C-TC60 modules. The modules were labled PC166 (of course not officially, but using 6ns RAM from Samsung).
Trouble is, none of the 10 modules wants to work in any motherboard I tried em in, 2x i845 chipsets (1x Asus P4B, 1x some other), 2x KT133A (1xAbit KT7A 1.0, 1xMSI KT7 Turbo 2). This led me to believe that the modules are fishy, but there seems to be another possible explanation for this: the KT-133A seems to accept only 256Mbit density modules, which the i845 should, however.
Is there a logical explanation for those modules not working (and if there is, can anyone guess at a motherboard capable of running these modules)?
Cheers,
Bernhard

| Jabra 250/Belkin/Skype Dave At K2computers 08:56:47 |
| | On a Windows 2000 pc I have Skype, and use a Jabra 250v connecting through a Belkin F8T008 USB dongle.
It all works apart from one annoying problem. If the headset is in Standby mode then nothing happens when I make a call, or for an incoming call. I have to go into My Bluetooth places and manually connect. I can leave the headset in Active mode but that eats the battery.
I would like it so that the headset goes from Standby to Active when needed, and drops back to Standby when no longer required.
Can this be done ?

Video Card Question!! B0omstICK 13:05:50 |
| | Hey Guys and Gals!!
Question for yall, I have an HP Pavilion a1110n desktop, got it last year in september. I use it primarily for gaming and Call of Duty 2 is the game of choice. Because of the high graphic demands of this particular game and most of the newer games these days I ran out and picked up a new card. I got the BFG GeForce FX 5500 O/C pci, only because I was stunned to find that my motherboard only had 3 pci slots!! However, I am not a huge computer buff and only know enough about them to get me by. How is it possible that a computer, regardless of the brand name, has not setup there systems so that they can be upgraded? Why would they not put in an AGP slot or if not that at least a PCI-E slot, Which I might add I have seen the setup for somewhere, either in the BIOS or within windows hardware/device manager. For some reason if when I check system specs on the computer itself, opposed to what it says in the specs listed in the manual, it says that it has detected a Pci-e slot and 2 pci. I could only think that maybe the graphics card that I installed has something to do with this. I guess to make a long story short, I would love to believe that my board does have a pci-e slot as this would be a great chance for me to go out and but a "REAL" card.
Thanks everyone |

| Video Card/Mobo compatability issue OR "A Tale of Two Notches" Rob 02:13:50 |
| | I bought a NOS Mobo (ECS- Elitegroup P4ITA2) for an old P4 my buddy gave me. I am gutting an old Athlon system I have to use for parts for the P4 system. In the AMD box there was a seemingly usable video card: an NVIDIA Riva TNT2 (maybe a M64?), I believe 16 MB. It's hard to tell b/c it's a COMPAQ part made by Nvidia...you know.
So anyway: the new Mobo says I MUST use a 1.5V video card. After looking online I saw that if the card has 2 notches it is 1.5V, however I ran across a post saying this rule is *usually* correct except in cases of TNT2 and another card. The card has the 1.5V tell-tale 2 notches.
A sticker on one side of the card reads: I.T.E Accessory 180-p0009-000-c00-8,-16 E204896 +3.3Vdc@2.7A, +5Vdc@100mA TWMIC001
Which leads me to believe this is indeed a 3.3V card. Does anyone have the correct info on this card?!?!
Just in case you need it: the part number is: 316903600002-ROB There is another serial below that: PWA-G4000PRO/GRAPHIC CARD
Please help me out if you can & Thanks ahead of time, Rob in NJ

| Total Failure Nik Diablo 10:57:36 |
| | Hi
I suddenly had a "mouse freeze" on me. The whole PC locked up and I rebooted, to Nothing!
I have a 8m old p4 3.2 with 512MB Ram, Win Xp Home SP2, 200MB MAXTOR (Yes Maxtor..I know what you're thinking) Hard Drive that has been making a Grating sound for about a week. It's a Diamond Plus 9, SATA and I'm assuming it's this that has "Gone". Also NVidia 256mb FX5700 AGP graphics.
When I reboot I get all the fans, power to the mobo etc, but no signal at all to the Viewsonic VE710b monitor. The H/D light comes on (Constant light, not flickering) for about a minute, then switches off. I get NO bootup screen or anything. Is this the H/D, MoBo, Memory or what? Any ideas Greatly appreciated.
Nik

| Dialing Problem - Netzero Jim T . 01:50:27 |
| | I maintain a NetZero free dialup subscription just in case --- I can dial up OK from my laptop connected to my phone line and get a good connection. I can then access Comcast for mail, etc. Trying to do the same from my Desktop with what I think is the same setup I get a message "Can't start dialing" Not sure if its from XP or Netzero. Using the Windows dialer to call any number it works OK, so line is connected and ports etc must be OK. Assume some incompatibility between the modem (Dell on MB) and the NetZero dialer. XP claims drivers are OK and modem checks out. Will welcome any and all suggestions.

Which is the way to go: AMD Turion or Athlon? Mobility is not a crucial factor for most of the work will be done in front of TV. Thanks a lot.

The current version should be able to repair all formats: FAT12 (only used by floppies today), FAT16, FAT32, NTFS.

| Recovering Lost Data From A Corrupted HDD - findpart David 14:11:15 |
| | Hi all, & Svend Olaf if you are out there... ;)
/STARTINTRO - Non technical background dribble paragraph here... I am trying to recover some data from a corrupted Western Digital 120GB HDD that I have been using with my "trusty" old Abit BP6 motherboard. For those of you that aren't aware this 8+ year old machine uses the Highpoint HPT366 chipset that brings & enables the "amazingly fast" (well it was for its time) ATA-66 technology. However, apparently, there have been may reports of these disk controllers failing. I suppose after 8 years of service, many computer components will fail.
After 8 years of faithful service, my HDD controller decided to "join the team" & along the way it also very quickly managed to corrupt a large amount of data on my HDD. Yes, I do backups, but unfortunately, not regularly enough. After failing to boot, I decided to see what was wrong... here follows the techical bit... /ENDINTRO
I ran Svend Olaf's findpart utility first on my corrupted NTFS 120GB dynamic disk - drive (number 2) -- findpart 2
Disk: 2 Cylinders: 14593 Heads: 255 Sectors: 63 MB: 114470
--PCyl N ID -----Rel -----Num ---MB --Start CHS- ---End CHS-- BS CHS 0 - 07 63234420417114463 0 1 1 14591 254 63 B OK
No FATs found. There were sectors, which could not be read. First read error in this search CHS: 5432 0 33 Last read error in this search CHS: 5432 0 33
Partitions according to partition tables on second harddisk:
--PCyl N ID -----Rel -----Num ---MB --Start CHS- ---End CHS-- BS CHS 0 1*42 63234420417114463 0 1 1 14591*254 63 OK 0 2 42234420480 16065 7 14592* 0 1 14592*254 63 OK
****************************************************************************
I didn't like the look of the message above telling me that there were "sectors that could not be read", so I thought I would try to see how much (MB) of files could be by running the following both in DOS mode & in Windows - to be sure there was not any Windows driver issues -- findntfs 2 summary
FindNTFS, version 1.54. Copyright Svend Olaf Mikkelsen, 2005.
OS: DOS 8.00
Disk: 2 Cylinders: 14593 Heads: 255 Sectors: 63 MB: 114471
CHS 0/1/1 LBA: 63
Directories: 3114 Files: 37651 Trees: 84 Exe/dll files: 2357 Exe/dll files signature: 2354 Not referenced files: 350 Cluster KB: 4 MFT cluster no: 786432 MFT size: 199704576 MFT cluster bytes: 4096 Listed files MB: 12647 Code page used: 437 ****************************************************************************
This was also not good to see. Only 12647 MB of listed files, when I know that my 120GB drive was around 80% full, it should be closer to around 100000 MB.
So, my questions: - Is the corruption on this drive so bad that I can only see 12% of what is there? - Is there something else I can do to find the remainder of these files? - Being a Dynamic Windows Disk, is there something unusual with the MFT records that I need to adjust for to find the remaining data on the disk?
I have run a findpart findfile 2 0 14591 fp-a.txt, but I am not sure on how to interpret these results & how I get findntfs to recover more than just the original 12647 MB & what I should try next. I am happy to compress this file & send it.
Can anyone out there help me. Many Thanks. David.

| The average temperature of Celeron D 320, 2.4 GHz Scorpius 14:53:08 |
| | What is supposed to be the average temperature range of Celeron D 320, 2.4 GHz, using ZALMAN CNPS7000B-Cu fan, with room temperature at about 25'C? I'm getting 46-49'C (it gets to 54'C after 20 minutes of burn-in test) for average workload. Isn't this kind of too high? Namely, I also have a P4 2.6 GHz with a 'nothing-special' fan, and its temperature is 42'C.
Shouldn't the aforementioned Zalman cool the whole thing down better (btw, its rpm is set to max)? Or are these Celeron D's just hotter in general?

| Case Advice Wanted Guest 19:03:36 |
| | I'm looking for a home pc case offering decent active cooling and low noise. However, I don't care about shiney paint, flashy lights, or windows that let you see inside. In otherwords, I want funciton and don't want to have to pay for cosmetics. I also don't require a lot of bays, but I would like front ports for USB and maybe audio. Of cousre I don't want something flimsy, but I don't need a tank either because I don't intend on moving it around much. If power supply comes with case, 450watt minimum.
I've found a few cases (power supply included) in the $70 that are close to what I want, but not quite. I've found some cases I like in the $110 (and over) range, but in most cases there is no power supply and, as mentioned, I'm just paying for cosmetics. I'm hoping to find some middle ground.
Any links for online case reviews would also be very helpful. What I've found so far isn't very inclusive.
Thanks if you can help!
