| Looking for an inexpensive desktop Shred 09:18:04 |
| | What is the least expensive way to go as far as a complete system goes, including OS, keyboard, mouse, and monitor? Could I build one cheaper than buy it already put together? I remember a day when building one was cheaper. Is it still?
My mom's friend needs an inexpensive system for Internet and email.
What is the least she can expect to spend for a system and where can I get her one? Or, what components (mobo, cpu, etc...) and where should I go to get them to build her one? I usually shop at Newegg.
Thanks a lot.

| Strange Screws Guest 00:51:42 |
| | I'm looking for a 5-point star shaped screwdriver. I bought a Seagate 80GB external hard drive. Its case uses these special screws. I shot a picture of a screw here: http://www.gearhack.com/Forums/Tool/Screwdriver_for_5-Point_Star_Screw.files.hidden/5-point%20star.jpg
Does anyone know where I can find a screwdriver for these screws? Thanks.

| | I'm trying to reinstall windows xp on a 533MHz PIII. The machine had been running windows xp and suddenly began rebooting on boot-up just after the logo screen. I tried re-installing with all unnecessary h/w removed and ram and hd replaced. i constantly get the following stop error after the first reboot of the install:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL .... STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I'm having no luck searching for this particular set of parameters. Any ideas on the problem? Are there any diagnostic tools that will verify the hardware? Thanks,

| APC Smart-UPS vs Cyberpower CPS1500AVR 00_DotNetWarrior 06:12:25 |
| | Thanks a lot for all the comments, I think I will get a better one. I went to tigerdirect, they carry APC Smart-UPS 1500 VA and they also carry Cyberpower CPS1500AVR (1500 VA) Is this Cyberpower any good? It said it's design for running server, it's like 30% less expensive than Smart-UPS... any idea?
Thanks
Alex.

| New Build GigsByte GA-8I955X-Royal--Ideas?? Spareone3 06:12:07 |
| | Model Name : GA-8I955X-Royal -------------------------- M/B Rev : 1.1 BIOS Ver : f8 Serial No. : SN0543000024 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VGA Brand : GIGABYTE Model : 7800GT CPU Brand : Intel Model : 830 Speed : 3GHz Operation System : N/A SP : Memory Brand : Corsair Type : DDRII Memory Size : 2 x 512 Speed : 667 Power Supply : Aspire ATX-AS500W-BK
System fails to fully boot or enter BIOS setup, (Get 1 beep which is normal I think). Will fully complete on screen Memory check OK finds 1Gb running in Dual mode, IDE scan finds drives, then crashes/hangs and I lose VGA sync and cannot even reset motherboard by case reset button! (Reset works OK if I reset within first 2 seconds prior to hang) GigaByte DPS blue LEDs illuminate one at a time and then all go out at point of hang. I have cleared CMOS and removed motherboard from chassis disconnecting all but VGA card. This is a new system build and therefore has never booted. No O/S is loaded on the machine. I have a 24 pin connector fitted to m/b, however I only have a 2x2 12V supply to the CPU. All literature suggests that only on a 840 and 845 CPU requires 2x4 12V..Is this correct... I have worked with Gigabytes boards week in and week out and this seems an uncommon failure, however it is the first Dual core system and so this hardware configuration is unproven!
Has anyone run an 830D on this or any other board using just the 2x2 12v P4 supply? Any help would be appreciated!

| motherboard for FX-51 Beall 03:13:02 |
| | I have an AMD Athlon FX51 CPU. I have been using an Asus SK8V motherboard which I have really liked, but after a recent thunderstorm my ethernet card seems to have taken a hit. Now, I am having to use the USB port for my cable internet service. Just out of curiosity, I have been surfing around looking for a replacement motherboard. Not much available. Anyone else have the FX51? If so, do you have a good web site to buy older motherboards for that particular CPU? Or do you know of any other options? At present, I do not plan to upgrade my cpu, but I will get the itch sooner or later...

| PSU load tester Skeleton Man 12:59:41 |
| | Hi all,
I'm soon to be reviewing a new 750W psu but I don't have anything for load.. I have seen heavy mention of wire wound power resistors of 'various values' but no mention of what those values are. I can get various load resistors of around 100ohm/10W from ebay.. but oviously 100ohm isn't gonna be sufficient.. I'm not sure if 10W is heavy enough either..
Any suggestions on the values I should use to create a good load... I'm talking like 600W+ at least.. and if I can setup multiple banks of resistors that would be good too so I can have 100W, 200W, 350W, 500W, etc..
Just to be clear I want a _load tester_ not a $10 PSU tester that tells me if it's dead or alive..
I have a good DMM and will probably buy a second so I can measure V and A simultaneously.. I also plan on getting a Kill-A-Watt P3 meter.. so the load tester is the only real concern I have..
Thanks in advance..
Chris

| Gamepad disappeared Ampersand 07:28:18 |
| | I'm having a problem right here: I have 2 Gravis Game Pad Pro gamepads (regular, not USB), but I usually only keep the first one connected since my system is becoming choppy when both are connected. Usually, when I connect the second one, Windows (XP) recognizes it as the second gamepad, and simply lists it in the Game Controllers control panel as being "OK". Then I can unplug it and plug it back later and Windows will still recognize it as the same gamepad. However, yesterday, I connected it (the second one), and I had a PnP message saying "New hardware had been found", and so Windows installed the appropriate Game Pad Pro driver, something that never happens normally, because I always plug in the same additional gamepad. So I tried to play a game but only my first gamepad worked; I then looked at the control panel's Game Controllers only to find out that 3 (!) Game Pad Pros were listed as "OK", even if only 2 were connected. I clicked on "Properties" to find out which was the first, and as I expected, the buttons on the first pad responded. Same thing for the second one listed, whose buttons would not respond: the first one's buttons did respond, though. Just as if the first pad was listed twice. I then tried to click on "Properties" for the third pad, but couldn't see the appropriate window, as it kept on disappearing right after popping up. What I did is I deleted the second pad (because I thought it was a duplicate of the first one), and then both of my gamepads disappeared in the "Game Controllers" control panel. I thought rebooting would make Windows redetect the gamepad(s), but it didn't. Same when I turned my computer back on this morning: nothing. Just in case one might wonder: yes, my gameport is listed in the "Hardware" section. I desperately need help on this one, as it has never happened before (maybe it is because of the fact that I recently installed Gravis Xperience (a week ago) to use keyboard emulation in one of my games and it was the first time I plugged in the second pad since installing it. Who knows?) I thought about going into the registry and deleting every Gravis Game Pad Pro entry I could find, except for the entry where all Windows-recognized gamepads are listed. However, I'm not sure this wouldn't screw up something so I'd rather ask first. Any ideas? Thanks you very very very very much!!

| ARGOSY - HD363N - Network Storage BobVal 06:23:17 |
| | I have just purchased a Argosy - HD363N Network Storage Enclosure and put in my Maxtor 200 gig drive.
This Enclosure connects to your router by RJ45 and allows adding Network storage cheaply.
It supports Fat16, Fat32.
The problems I am having:
1) When the drive wakes up after being unsed for a while it does not allways connect properly and needs to be restarted.
2) I copied all the files I needed to the drive and have just used applications that READ only from the drive but do not write and now I have files that are corrupted.
Is anyone using this Network Enclosure? Are you having any of these problems?

| Serial ATA power connector Mike 21:10:30 |
| | I am confused about the Serail ATA power connector for hard drives I seems to me that there are two sata power types, A real sata connector, and an adapted type.
I noticed that a sata hard drive has a different looking power connector than the one for the old style (Molex). And I have been reading some articles that show a different Pinout for Sata. It shows an extra 3.3 volt tap. But if you use a Molex to sata adapter you do not get the 3.3. volt source. Yet the sata drive still functions ok. I have even seen a good many power supplies that do not have a true sata setup, just adapted off the Molex leads Why does sata have the extra power wires, if they are not needed ? Or have I missed something ?
Thanks for your advice Mike

| Low Voltage from the Central Air Crashes My Computer JRoughgarden 19:21:30 |
| | When our A/C comes on, it pulls a lot of power. The lights dim momentarily, but all the computers in the house weather it fine, except one: my homemade Asus 2.67 GHz dual-proc system.
I purchased a Belkin UPS and an APC Line-R voltage regulator. I can see the indicator light on the APC regulator show low voltage on occasion when the AC is on. But bottom line is that the APC device cannot make up for the problem.
Does anyone think the problem is in the power supply on this computer? If so, is there a model or type that could withstand the voltage drops better? I can't recall the output of my current model, but I do recall searching for a quiet one with adequate margin. Would a very much oversized model do any better?
Any advice is much appreciated.

| USB troubles Ricky Romaya 06:40:46 |
| | Grrrrr, I have nothing but endless problems here. I have setup successfully, without any hassle, Canon i255 printer. After that, I disconnect the USB printer cable from the printer, but leave it attached to the USB port. While I'm writing the vendor about my graphic adapter problems in win98se, my win2k suddenly crash with endless beep on the pc speaker. I tried to reboot, but unsuccessfull, then reset button to the rescue.
After reboot, at the point where the system info box displayed (just before entering OS selection menu) there are beeps on the pc speaker. Then I found out that the keytboard isn't working. The beeps are several fast beeps (couldn't count, too fast), a pause, then a single beep. I remove the USB cable, then things are working normal again.
The USB port used is the one on the backpanel which is built onto the mobo. I tried to switch port (the one directly on top of it, if the mobo is laid down) and the same problem occurs. Strangely, if I connect the cable to the ports on the extra backpanel (the one which attached to the mobo by cables), the problem doesn't occur. I haven't tried to print from that port yet.
2 additional things I've noticed. Even if I disable the USB controller (from the BIOS), and attached the cable to the ports on the backpanel which built onto the mobo, the problem persists.
Another, If I attached the cable, on any available USB ports, there are now noticable delays in power up, specifically, between when I push the power button and when the power kicks in. Before this problem, it's almost simultaneous, even with the cable attached.
Plz Help TIA

| Problem with PCMCIA 4 USB ports card P 15:10:09 |
| | Hi, I bought a pcmcia card with 4 usb, but I have this problem: On my Celeron 650mhz notebook with windows xp, I plugged it, windows recognized it and it works well. On my pentium 150mhz MMX notebook that does not have any usb port (it's a Siemens Scenic mobile 700) with windows ME, I plugged it, but windows didn't see it. I tried installing drivers but nothing. In the hardware list nothing is changed, there isn't neither any ? yellow item nor usb devices with a ! . I also tried to connect a usb LED lamp to these ports and it didn't turn on. The only thing I am sure that the pcmcia slot on the notebook are good, because if I connect a LAN card or a modem they works well. What could I do? Please help me, thank you, bye.

| SDR SDRAM advice needed Bernhard Hortens 15:46:41 |
| | Hello there!
I have recently bought some 512 MB SDRAM sticks, using 8x Samsung K4S511632C-TC60 modules. The modules were labled PC166 (of course not officially, but using 6ns RAM from Samsung).
Trouble is, none of the 10 modules wants to work in any motherboard I tried em in, 2x i845 chipsets (1x Asus P4B, 1x some other), 2x KT133A (1xAbit KT7A 1.0, 1xMSI KT7 Turbo 2). This led me to believe that the modules are fishy, but there seems to be another possible explanation for this: the KT-133A seems to accept only 256Mbit density modules, which the i845 should, however.
Is there a logical explanation for those modules not working (and if there is, can anyone guess at a motherboard capable of running these modules)?
Cheers,
Bernhard
