| Athlon x2 4800+ ? Larry Hodges 01:37:39 |
| | What I've got:
Athlon x2 4800+ 939, Toledo: https://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80728-R My mobo is an Abit KN8: http://abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=284 Ram is Patriot DDR400 stepping at 2-3-2-5. 2gigs
Ok. My BIOS allows me to change the CPU FSB clock, which is 200 by default. I've been told not to set this above about 205 or I can fry the CPU. Is that true? Got a recommended setting? CPU has stock cooling.
The multiplyer is changable, but is already maxed out at 12x.
I can adjust CPU core voltage. Also RAM voltage and Ref voltage. There is also nForce4 voltage and HyperTransport voltage.
Any recommendations?

| Another dead Maxtor Noozer 22:50:02 |
| | Not a rant here... Just an FYI...
I had a 120gig Maxtor fail on me last night. About a years use on it. It was a replacement for a previously failed drive. Luckily nothing important was lost.
At least getting an Advance RMA was easy. Just waiting for the new drive to arrive.

| NiMH in a mouse ? Osiris 21:56:32 |
| | from wikipedia:
"Care must also be taken during discharge to ensure that one or more cells in a series-connected battery pack, like the common arrangement of four AA cells in series in a digital camera, do not become completely discharged and go into polarity reversal. Cells are never absolutely identical, and inevitably, one will be completely discharged before the others. When this happens, the "good" cells will start to "drive" the discharged cell in reverse, which can cause permanent damage to that cell."
NiMH cells deliver energy at a very constant rate. They do not "slow down" very much. But they drop down in capacity very fast towards the end of a charge.
Hypothesis: For modern mice, that use very little power, NiMH would not be a good choice, because before you know it, you're at the end of a charge and reversing occurs.
Plausible ?

| Cloning different size drives using Ghost 9 Louise 21:19:21 |
| | I have a 160 gig SATA Samsung drive which has been the object of much discussion recently because it is showing an error and hutil reports it has "defects".
Fearing failure, I've purchased a replacement drive: I've gotten the Seagate ST3300622AS SATA 2 300 gig drive. This drive can be run on my Asus P4C800 E Deluxe at 1.5
I own Ghost 9 and would like to use it to clone the 160 gig Samsung to the 300 gig Seagate.
Is this likely to work? And assuming it works, is there any way to clone the Samsung but have the new Seagate be seen as my C drive with the full size (300 gig).
In other words, if I clone the 160 gig drive, I don't want to land up with a new C drive which thinks it is 160 gig when it is actually 300 gig. And I would prefer to have the whole 300 gig as one partition.
Can I do this with Ghost 9? If not, can it be done another way?
I run many different programs and each is "customized" with all my preferences etc. I would very much like to avoid having to re-load the entire drive - so much so, that if that's the only way, I may just wait for the Samsung to fail (yes, I do backup every day).
Thanks to all of you for your help and explorations of this situation.

| Whats the deal with 24pin ATX PSU connectors Pete 20:02:21 |
| | I have just bought a Ultra Xconnect power supply 400watts to use in conjunction with a AMD 3500+ and skt 939 board.
Here it is: http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=42&pPath=296&productID=304
It says it supports Pentium 4 and AMD CPUs and meets ATX version 2.03 and ATX 12V version 1.2 specification.
When I bought it I thought it was the dogs bollocks but now I see motherboards with 24 pin PSU connectors and wonder what's going on.
Have I bought a lemon? Is it out of date? Has the ATX spec moved on?
Can you plug a 20pin ATX connector from the power supply onto a 24pin connector on the motherboard and then use a 4 pin lead for the remaining 4 pins or would I need a convertor?
The motherboard I want to use it with has the following connectors:
24-pin ATX Power connector 4-pin ATX 12V Power connector
Would I need to buy extra cables / convertors to use it with this board?
Thanks
Pete

| SATA Drives Question Israel Richner 19:32:44 |
| | My IDE 80 GB drive just failed , but I do have a WD SATA 120 GB 150mb/s drive . So what I want to do now is buy another SATA drive and set them up for redundency.
Questions:
1) Do I need to get a drive of the same size?
2) My mother board only supports SATA transfers of 150mb/s, and my current SATA drive is 150 mb/s, can I buy a 300 mb/s SATA drive or do I have to buy a 150. I realize if the 300 will work, it will scale itself down to match the other drive, the only reason I would buy the 300mb/s drive is for future upgrades.
In case you need to know I'm using the ABIT IC7-MAX3 mother board and my OS is WinXP Pro.
my final goal is to have 2 drives working as one and if one fails the other will keep on working.
Thankd for your help, Izzy

| Lightning Surge, what should I do? Guest 19:16:30 |
| | Recently a thunderstorm and a nearby lightning strike, sent a surge through my ineffective surge protectors, I have since gotten a much better one, and fried something in my computer. After the initial surge, it tried starting up, and now all that happens during power up is I believe the HD trying to spin(or something else spinning). Do you think that it's the mobo that's fried or perhaps something more replaceable like a power supply?

| Raid compatability - IDE Mitchell Ben 16:31:42 |
| | Hi,
This is my first post, I hope it in the right place!
I'm new to PC modding, except for adding memory or a New graphics card.
I want to speed up my current PC as I play BF2 Online & I am almost the last one to get in.
My Current setup is Medion P4 2.6 1GB Pc2700 333mhz 160GB Samsung ATA ATI X800 Pro
What would be the best way speeding up the data access
I did buy a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300gb 16mb cache with an idea run the game from here, but talking to a couple of guys has told me that this wont do a lot to speed things up & I need to think about a raid setup.
I have two IDE channels, currently IDE 0 has the Samung as master & a DVD-Rom as slave the other IDE channel has a DVD-RW
what do I need in place to go ahead with a raid setup
any suggestions welcome

| Xilence power PSU DustWolf 14:55:14 |
| | I've got a computer here with a Xilence power 550W PSU.
That PSU is built for silence as is the entire computer.
The PSU's large fan does not spin innitially when turning on the computer, and does not spin up for some time unless gently nudged with a stick.
Even tho such behaviour would seem normal if the PSU's temperature regulation is providing the fan insufficient voltage to start up when the PSU is still cold, I am not used to seeing it. My usual brand of PSUs is LC Power and their regulated speed PSU fans always spin when the PSU is turned on.
Anyone with experience using these Xilence Power PSU's? Is it normal for their fans not to spin innitially or am I looking at a brand new computer supplied with a PSU with a partialy busted fan?

| A hot running SL6PG Stephan Carydakis 11:38:54 |
| | Hi All,
I have posted this question to another group (alt.comp.hardware.overclocking) just recently. In an attempt to find similar experiences or further suggestions, I thought I would post here as well.
I recently purchased a used P4 SL6PG (http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SL6PG). Basically, the idle temps are very high but the full load temps are within the Intel specs. At first, with a stock cooler, I had socket temps of 58c idle / 64c full load after running Prime95 for 2 or so hours and under-volted at 1.5 volts. The mobo temps are 27/29, HDD are around 32 and the ambient temp is 23c. I have 80mm inlet and exhaust fans. I purchased a Scythe Samurai Z in an attempt to get lower temps and this was the case. The idle temp dropped to 51c and full load to 55c. Remember that these are socket sensor temps and not CPU diode temps. Switching to the diode sensor adds 7 or 8 degrees Celsius to the stated temps. Currently, the CPU diode temps read 58c idle and 62c full load (again Prime95 maximum heat tests for over 3 hours for the load temps).
My system seems to be very stable however I am concerned with the high idle temp. Even though I have a stable system, does anyone's experienced opinion say that these readings indicate a 'badly' overclocked (insufficient cooling, over volted etc) CPU? I'm hesitant to believe that the mobo is giving false or inaccurate readings because the CPU that came out of the same system, a P4 2.4b @ 2.88 and 1.6 volts, ran at 49c idle / 64c full load on stock Intel cooling.
My OS is Win2k AS and I use Motherboard Monitor 5 to get these readings.
Thanks in advance,
Steph.

| Getting the most out of a Geforce FX 5700 Cronzor 09:37:03 |
| | Alrighty, so I've recently upgraded my system memory as I run a lot of memory-intensive apps, and the clear bottleneck for gaming is my old vidcard. I don't plan on plunking much more money into this PC, so I intend on waiting, then buying the best AGP card available when it's cheaper, then riding the wave til this PC is obsolete..(in other words, I won't be going for a PCI-E card. My mobo doesn't support PCI-E and all the upgrades will not be worth it).
That said, I'm gonna need to use this Geforce FX 5700 (ASUS V9570 TD 256MB) until the 7xxx class cards cost about half of what they do now. I was wondering if I could get some help getting the most out of it. I have attempted overclocking with Coolbits: Overclocking the memory a mere 1 Mhz does not cause artifacts or instability, but makes everything EXTREMELY SLOW. Games and benchmarks slow to a CRAWL (maybe 1/10th the normal FPS - brutal and very noticeable). I refuse to believe that a 1 Mhz difference over stock speeds is doing this - something is up.
Anything I'm doing wrong, and any other tips (like disabling useless features that take too much power for my card)? Primarily looking for those settings I can tweak that won't take too much out of my gaming experience. Any help appreciated.

Dont go by that chart for a future upgrade unless by future you dont > mean too far off. I thought В«that chartВ» was updated regularly. So, my final choice might not be an AMD 64 3500+. Just before I buy a new computer, I read reviews, listen to what "some" salesmen say, and make a decison on a 100$ processor mainly for word processing and cropping a few pictures to use as backgrounds. If I was using databases, editing film... or playing games, it would be a whole different story.
Ten years ago, I was more aware of the hardware scene. It was easier because there weren't that many different lines of processors and I had to keep an interest in the matter since a new processor + more faster memory was always a blessing. But today... I couldn't care less if Vista required 1 G of RAM, I'll never use that crap! I wouldn't use it if they paid me!
Still, sometimes, I'd like to understand better what's going on on the processor scene. I know 64 bit processors have arrived on the popular market a few years ago and that, nowadays, it's better to buy a 64 bit processor. I know some basics: what a register is, what cache is, what a dual core processor is, what 65 nanometer means vs 90 nm. Still, because I don't read much on the subject, I'm quite confused.
For instance, AMD used to offer only Athlons, then Semprons, CPUs. Now they have an FX, an AM2 and what, an X series? Trying to sort out the processors of only one manufacturer is really a pain. They seem much more interested in serving you a big publicity hoopla than the bare basics.
So, before following your exposГ© on 754s, 939s, Conroes E6300, D805s, X2s, AM2s, I would need to know a little bit about the different lines of processors. You know, what's the conceptual scheme behind them. Is there any place I can find this information or can you give a *short* description of the different lines of processors. Don't insist too much on OC capabilities, I'm really not much into this.

Intel in the crosshairs, as execs explain themselves
By Paul Hales: Monday 24 July 2006, 14:31 BEST MATES AMD and ATI held a conference call today in which the companies' biggest cheeses sought justify their new cohabitation.
The 'excited' executives were led by AMD CEO Hector Ruiz who lauded the deal as re-shaping the future of the industry. "We're excited about what we can do together in a market dominated for years by one company," in the first of many digs at arch-competitor Intel.
AMD confirmed that much of ATI's operation will be brought in-house, but AMD will remain, "committed to ATI's customers, employers and Canada," said Ruiz.
He added that he didn't expect lay-offs "in any significant numbers".
Ruiz confessed that AMD had been mulling its best options for a partnership over the past two to three years and it is ATI's expertise in the mobility space as well as its chipset business that makes the firm such a good fit with AMD.
The ATI team will play and key role in the joint future of the company he said, adding he was confident that the companies and their respective cultures would integrate well together, their products having occupied "adjacent real-estate on motherboards" for so long.
The executives, Ruiz and ATI CEO Dave Orton, along with Dirk Meyer and chief AMD bean counter Bob Rivet were agreed the deal would provide better value to customers and shareholders in both companies. Bob said the merged company would be better positioned to achieve AMD's stated objective to "break the monopoly".
AMD's customers had been insisting AMD play a bigger role in the "eco-system" of its mobility and consumer electronics marketplaces, said Meyer.
He said he expected the PC to continue to play a central role in both the business environment and the home, suggesting that "non-general purpose" processing units such as GPUs would be integrated into computing platforms much like the floating point co-processor had disappeared over the past ten to fifteen years.
Dave Orton confessed to being as excited as anyone. Be said the combined company would be able to look beyond the CPU, GPU and chipset landscapes and increase its penetration into enterprise, mobile computing and consumer electronics sectors.
"AMD has great CPUs, we have great GPUs," he said. He reckoned the next stage for the merged company would be to integrate its offerings, combining two or more products to create devices that improve on the sum of their two parts.
The new company will achieve "cost synergies" worth $75 million by the end of 2007, increasing to $125 million by the end of 2008. By then the company will be well into its "integration plan", more details on which it promised to deliver soon.
The company expects to lose ATI revenues from it work on Intel platforms which bean-counting Bob said was worth about $100 million per quarter, a loss Ruiz is confident the company will make up for.
Dave Orton said ATI would continue to deliver Intel chipsets for as long as its customer wanted it to.

| Video Editing? AMD Athlon 64FX-55 2.6ghz or Athlon 64X2 400?? Dutch 03:22:47 |
| | Dear Colleagues,
I am in a bit of a quandry and ask for your guidance.
I am in the process of building myself a video editing box for use with Adobe Premier. The box itself is going to have 4 gigs of memory and a mid-range, 256mb video card since I am told that video rendering occurs mostly on the processor.
I am looking at the AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 2.6ghz or an Athlon 64 X2 4400 processor. There is a significant difference in price, but thats not my primary concern.
The bottom line, for video editing, I see that the FX-55 does not have a dual-core processor while the Athlon 64X2 does. Am I correct that I am better off in terms of performance for my particular application with the dual core. . . or not?
Advice is greatly appreciated.

I haven't tried the games again, but I think that is much less a problem than the nearly invisible fonts at the 1680 setting. Much progress indeed. NOW I have a nice toy

I ran the Samsung Diagnostics and all was fine in the quick tests. Then I went ahead and went into the deeper level of checking. I am getting an error:

I ran chkdsk /f again and then the deep level Samsung. Samsung came up with the same error.

Should I worry about this? Do I need to run out and replace the disk? Will I suddenly have no disk?

| Please Help - Intel D975XBX Conroe X6800 Terrys Datanet Account 02:01:57 |
| | Guys.
Can anyone here can help me please.
I am building a new High spec PC and cannot get it to boot.
The system starts and sits at a blank screen - No post, No Post beep.
Here's the spec
Intel D975XDX Rev 304 Motherboard Intel Conroe Core 2 Extreme X6800 CPU Corsair TWIN2X 8500C5 DDR2, 2048MB CL5, Kit w/two 1GB Dimm's, E.P.P Technology Gainward GeForce 7950GX2 1GB,1.4ns GDDR3 ,PCI-Express,"BP7950GX2-1000-TV-DD",HDCP PSU - I have tried 2 Antec 550W and Hiper Modular PSU 580 true power ATX 2.2 compatible
I connect al the components and boot the PC. all fans start but nothing happens. no post, no beep nothing.
I have disconnected everything but the Graphics card, memory and CPU still no good.
If I remove the memory altogether I get the memory failed beeps.
I have seen other PCs on the net with the same Mobo and Graphics card but different memory.I have seen PCs on the net with the same Mobo and memory but different graphics card both specs working fine.
I have tried another lower spec CPU to see if it was the BIOS or board rev but that didn't boot either.
The Nvidia 9750 chipset is on the Intel D975XDX supported list The Nvidia Intel Conroe Core 2 Extreme X6800 CPU is on the Intel D975XDX supported list
Corsair memory is supported by the Intel D975XDX but probably not Corsair TWIN2X 8500C5. However there are a number of people on the net who are using it on this board with the X6800 CPU.
The only anomaly at the moment is this motherboard comes with a 2x4 CPU power connector instead of the usual 2x2 but Intel supply a 2x2 to 2x4 converter cable. I have tried a Pentium D processor of a much lower spec with the same lack of result.
Is there any difference between using a power supply with a 2x4 connector and a power supply with a 2x2 and using a 2x2 to 2x4 converter? I wouldn't have thought so.
I know this is a pretty rare spec box at the mo but I hope someone can help. I'm fed up with looking at a Ј2,000 paper weight .
Thanks Guys

In the last 9 months I had two new maxtor drives fail without warning. The same system has drives from other companies which work pefectly. The money and data loss was much more that buying a new drive.
Also their RMA system and costumer support are really bad.
