| Cant use these two drives together SpreadTooThin 23:52:49 |
| | I have to older drives I'm trying to get to work together but won't...
On the Primary IDE channel...
Master: Maxtor 40.0 GB AT Model D740X-6L (On maxtor site it says 80 GB but the drive is 40 GB) Slave: Maxtor 40.0 GM ATA Fireball 3
I've tried both as master and slave. The fireball allways seems to the trouble... both using Cable Select didn't work either...

| ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Socket 939 Olliejk 22:50:25 |
| | I've been having some trouble and I'm trying to track down if it is could be related to my ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Socket 939 mobo. On cold boots I often get a blue screen of death with little info in the memory dump. Basically it indicates there is SOME kind of hardware error. Happening out of nowhere, it only happens on boot-up. It also happens, however, when I connect certain USB devices. It doesn't happen with everything. My old MP3 player (was a hard drive one) my joystick, and my card reader are fine. My printer ( HP 2575 all in one) and new MP3 player (Creative ZEN Vison M) cause the BSoD. Also, it occasionally will restart instead of shut down. It will go through the entire shut-down sequence, but powers right back up again (and yes I did choose shut-down not restart). I've had these problems through 2 different video cards. I've tried all sorts of chipset changes and USB device changes, but to no avail. Before I spend more hours trying different BIOS settings, does anyone know if this is a KNOWN problem with these Mobo's? I suppose there is an outside chance it is the power supply (I've heard of weirder).

| 1gb usb memory stick ezcool, really slow write speed Nathan 22:37:29 |
| | hi there i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the ezcool usb memory stick. I picked one up for $30 from a computer store (1gb model) but have found the write speeds are incrediable slow. i have tried formatting the unit several times but this has not helped, i have also tried plugging the unit into several usb ports on my computer. my computer has a usb 2.0 card in it and i have previously used usb keys from other places (such as the dse 256mb usb key) and my psp and not experienced any slow transfer rates. The fastest write speed is supose to be 11mb/s
for example to copy MobileFirefox1.5.0.4 16.8mb unzipped it took 4mins
please let me know if this is unusal thanks nathan

| Still one more question about AMD processors Yugo 22:33:36 |
| | Me and Paul were having this discussion. (Quoted text is Paul's) But it seems Paul is busy today... or maybe I made a complete fool of myself, but I still don't understand. My question is at the very end of the text, but following the discussion might help.
I would like to thank Paul for all the information he's provided so far.
---------------
Cool N' Quiet is a feature of Athlon64 processors. When Windows > is idle, the "CPU driver" can write a FID (frequency) control > register, and drop the processor from 2400MHz, to 1000MHz. Since in many interactive (web surfing, email) situations, the > processor is idle most of the time, this saves electricity > and makes the processor run cooler. It immediately speeds up > as soon as you move the mouse.
It seems there's also a driver for Linux 2.6.10 and later kernels:
AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology Processors, AMD Opteron™ Processors, and AMD Athlon™ 64 Processors Driver Version 1.60.01 for Linux 2.6. - Supports all AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology Processors, AMD Opteron™ Processors, and Athlon™ 64 Processors released through 2006. Provides support for AMD PowerNow!™ technology and, where appropriate, AMD’s Cool-n-Quiet™ technology for Linux systems. Works with all kernels, version 2.6.10 or later. Requires cpufreq-1.20, cpuspeed-1.20.1, or powersaved-0.8.19 or later to support SMP and dual-core systems.
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html
So, the same processor may run at different wattages. OK.
When the processor is running at full speed (say you are shrinking > a DVD before writing a movie to a blank DVD), then the power difference > between the high power and low power processors takes > effect. Maybe if you kept your processor busy all the time, > the lower power rated processor would give you a cooler running > computer. But for interactive style usage, the Cool N' Quiet feature > saves plenty of power. I see... but I'm afraid I'll have a question below.
As an example, look at PDF page 17 of this document. It shows the processor > ADA3500DEP4AS, a 3500+. > The allowed operating conditions, tested at the factory are: > Name Power Frequency > Max Pstate 89W 2200MHz > Intermediate Pstate #1 69W 2000MHz > Intermediate Pstate #2 50W 1800MHz > Min Pstate 22W 1000MHz Ok. Now, here's the SAME processor at:
http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/default.aspx
Processor: AMD Athlonв„ў 64 Model Number: 3500+ Frequency (MHz): 2200 L2 Cache Size: 512KB Socket: AM2 Stepping: F2 Manufacturing Tech (CMOS): 90nm SOI Wattage (W): System Bus (MHz): 2000
As you can see, there's nothing beside Wattage. At this stage, the choice is between 35 or 62. Isn't this to operate at 2200 MHz, the maximum frequency?

| POST ok, but Device Mgr shows yellow exclamations for CD drives Ritter197 22:26:09 |
| | I have a CD and a DVD drive and they show up in the POST and the Device Manager, but in the latter with a yellow exclamation mark.
They always worked before and during startup I see the lights on booth drives working.
Uninstalling from the Device Manager and letting Windows XP Pro find them is ok, it finds and identifies them but never says the hardware is now installed and can be used.
What can possibly cause this, especially since no new hardware was added and both worked fine for months.

| Concerned About Upcoming Drive Copy Tom 21:10:23 |
| | Hi,
I have a 120GB Western Digital drive that was split down the middle, so it has two partitions (C: and D . I have WinXP sp1 in the C: partition. I just purchased a new Western Digital 320GB drive where I would like to move the C: partition. The 320GB drive will likely just be one big partition (C . I'm not concerned about D: as that is just data and I can do a normal explorer Cut and Paste later to move the data to the 320GB drive once the OS has been moved.
In the past I've made backup images with Disk Image 2002 and while I have NEVER had to do a complete restore from the backups, the images have always reported no errors when verifying, even months later. Pulled a file out of the image maybe once or twice, but nothing major. So I feel somewhat comfortable with that software only to that degree.
Thinking that Drive Image 2002 was, perhaps, a little long in the tooth, I started to look around for newer software.
I am scared as hell after reading about Ghost and True Image!
Another option would be to use Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools drive copy, but I don't know how well that works. Seems a bit too simple.
I just don't feel confident about these four software packages (Drive Image 2002, Ghost, True Image and Data Lifeguard) that the end results will work 100 percent after the move and I won't find out that something is messed up until after I reformat the 120 GB drive.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,

| Forcing a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio on a LCD CFran 21:09:55 |
| | I now own a 5:4 LCD screen (a 17" Samsung SyncMaster 740n) and although I managed to have a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio on every 1280xXXXX resolution, or also on 1088x612, I have it stretched for 800x600 and 1024x768, and I can't find a way to resize that.
I have tried with PowerStrip's advanced timings with no luck, is there some utility or some thing to do to achieve that? I'm sure I'm not the only one to run into that type of problem, and I'm pretty sure that someone must have found/made a solution to that, I just need to be pointed to it

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM on my machine but I'm not sure what to get. I have a Medion Titanium MD 8084XL PC with two slots for RAM (right now there are two 256mb sticks for a total of 512MB of RAM) but I'm not sure what kind I can get. Anybody's help would be greatly appreciated.

| PC locks w/ added memory - what next? Zach 17:57:25 |
| | Asrock mb with a Pentium 2.8 Northwood 800 Mhz. Radeon 9800Pro. Had 512 mb ddr PC3200 with no probs over last couple of years. Put in another 512 and get lots of locking up (using any 2 of the 3 slots). Memtest showed nothing wrong running with both sticks, and a single 512 of either stick installed exhibited no problems either.
Borrowed two matching 512's (Geil) thinking there may be some timing issue but same problem.
At this point: can it be anything other than a flaky mamaboard? (ps? weird video card / 1 Gb memory interaction? or ?)
Thanks -

| | Hi I have got a vaio pcg-fx401 with Opensuse 10.1 installed and my pccard controller does not detect any cards. I haven't been using any of the for quite a while now but I do remember using them (one is an scsi controller and the other is a modem) successfully with earlier versions of SuSE (maybe 9.x, 8.x or even 7.x; Definitely worked four and a half years ago, which version was that then?). Controller is detected fine but when I query for cards I get:
vaio:~ # pccardctl status Socket 0: no card Socket 1: no card
And yes, they are both slotted in firmly. Same if I make a pccardctl insert before. Anybody have got the same problem (solved)? alex

My first power supply I had for a year and the only problems my computer was having was that it would freeze every once in a while. I don't know what caused this problem, and I never bothered to check the power supply. Recently, I reformatted and reinstalled windows and all of a sudden my computer started going into standby at random times (usually when there was a lot of HD activity or CPU activity, but not always). My CPU temp peaked at about 50c. My power supply was only giving 11.8~ amps on the 12v rail. I replaced the PSU, and same thing. Then I replaced it again with a 400W PSU, and same thing. My 12v rail won't give more than 11a even though it's rated at 20a.... | Linkstation 250Gb runs out of space when directories show 140Gb? Pete 12:09:10 |
| | Hi
My Linkstation has a share, with two subdirectories, that get backups via Pheonix backup, from two machines that are networked. One subdirectory shows 80Gb the other shows 60GB, however, the linkstation is saying its nearly full with 220Gb of the 250Gb available being used. The only other folder is the info folder that only appears to have a few Mb in it.
I dont understand why the linkstation is saying 220Gb has been used when doing windows properties on each folder shows significantly less space being used.
I have used the linkstation diagnostics to run a scan but it reported everythign fine.
This has happened to 2 seperate linkstations (the first one did it too, but also started making nasty noises and got replaced) but now the new one has apparently run out of space too.#
Anybody have any ideas?
Pete

| Ram Speed question Joe 11:39:43 |
| | I have just put together a new system AM2 X2 3800 on an Asus M2NPV-VM mb. I ordered two stickes of Corsair DDR2 667 ram which acording to corsair was suitable for this board. Well this computer will just flat out not run with both sticks of ram in it and them set to 667 speed. It will not even get booted. It will work with one stick of Ram at 667. In trouble shooting this I decided to try the ram at 533. Well the computer will run and is rock solid with both sticks of RAM in it when it is set to 533 instead of 667 where the ram is supposed to be. So my question, How much performance am I really loosing by running the Ram at 533 as aposed to 667 after all the X2 3800 is also available in the 939 soket in which ccase it would only be running DDR400 RAM. Are we talking 1 or 2 percent here or 10 or 20 percent because if we are only talking a few percent here I am not going to go to the trouble of returning the RAM but if we are talking significat diference I will swap the RAM

| Computer Error Guest 09:46:15 |
| | Ok, so today I was using both of my computers as normal - and Computer 1 had just been logged off with the monitor turned off. I was trying to print from Computer 2, and it wasn't working, so I began checking connections on both computers. After pressing in the cables on the back of computer 1, the computer started beeping, and when i went to log back in - there was no display on the monitor. So I restarted, and on start up it was just beeping again with no monitor display. It's beeping like this:
2 very short beeps (almost sounds like one) -pause- 8 short beeps -pause- 2 short beeps -pause- 1 short beep
I've looked at many different websites about the error beep codes, but I cannot find any that can explain what the problem is.
Any help is appreciated.

| Office Depot bait and switch Hal Greenlee 09:20:46 |
| | Office Depot advertises this week in their Sunday newspaper suppliment, on the front page, a laptop for $279.99. Price good until 8/05/06.
This ad is deceptive in that there is a $70 hidden fee. It states in the fineprint that shipping and handling are additional, but the amount is not given. And that while the item must be ordered instore, it is available by delivery only.
It mis-states that one can save $480 with the discounts offered. That is plainly untrue; the savings cannot be more than $410.
The ad plainly states that the base configuration price is $279.99. The local store manager explained that most of the $70 was for configuration, which in fact is not even required.
This ad is designed to draw people to the local store, only at which time they are told of the 25% add-on.
This is a level of deception I have not seen from Office Depot until recently. I will no longer do business with them as they have wasted my time, gas and patience.

| Pentium 965EE multiplier x16 Wolfgang 04:24:45 |
| | Hello,
I bought a pentium 965EE 3733Ghz/1066FSB CPU for an ASUS P5N32 SLI deluxe mainboard with 0310 bios. In the bios is the option to set the multiplier from x12 min. to x60 max. also in everest and sandra shows the same option. I was aghast to see, that the multiplier can be changed, but doesn't make effect when I save the change in bios. When the multiplier is set to x16, the CPU should run with 4300Mhz, but it still shows 3733Mhz.
Does some body know this CPU and the possibility to change the multiplier? Intel doesn't respond, ASUS doesn't know, some people say this, some people say that... Is there some body who really knows about
this stuff?
Thanks for answering, regards, Wolfgang

| Display Issues With Gigabyte Motherboard-Please Help! Guest 02:21:52 |

For some reason, cannot figure out why absolutely NOTHING will display on the screen, despite fresh, brand new parts and OEM stuff. Pretty high quality parts, but, sucks when you can't take advantage of them due to no display!
Just as a run down, we have attempted to flash the bios/CMOS reset, and are quite positive the display (monitors) are working we are trying to use.
No beeps come from the system.
Please, please help! Am anxious to use my new machine!

Power goes into the PSU via a male 3-pin connector, and the monitor is supplied via a female counterpart. For that matter, what's the name of this type of power connector with three flat pins, male or female ?

| Help! Hidden partition taking up half my hard drive space! Slugbug 01:11:13 |
| | We got our Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop recently, and one of the first things I did was to try uninstalling all the junk. It still seemed slow, so I downloaded all the drivers, located my Windows install disk, and then went to work. The system shipped with a 60 GB hard drive, so I expected to see about 55 GB of space available. Instead, I see about 30.
First thing I tried was my trusty old Maxtor CD that shipped with one of my drives. It has a utility for changing partition information. (deleting, creating new, and low level formatting) This utility was able to do a low level format, but it only seemed able to see half of the drive.
Then I tried another utility from a Seagate CD, "Zero Fill". Zero fill is supposed to write all zeroes to the entire hard drive. It takes forever, but usually gets rid of everything on the drive. This time, it took most of the day, and got stuck at about 50%.
I do remember that this thing shipped with "Norton Ghost", or at least I saw it in the list of programs. I am guessing that this program was used to create some sort of hidden partition, which was used to back up the system and all the junk it had on it as shipped. Of course, I already have a Windows install CD, and a backup of all the drivers, so I really don't need this backup. What I really want is to be able to access the entire 55 GB of storage that I bought.
There is no Ghost install CD, so I can't reinstall and then try to figure this out through the software. I tried downloading "Partition Logic", which is supposedly a clone of "Partition Magic", but even it couldn't seem to see the Ghost partition.
What I want to do is eliminate the other partition altogether, or at least shrink it down to next to nothing. Is buying a retail copy of Norton Ghost my only option at this point?
