| HDD quit working InOverMyHead 23:07:27 |
| | What does this mean?
Hard drive (Maxtor 80GB int.) is recognized on bootup POST but not by windows. Computer can't boot from it, and does not recognize it from a DOS floppy boot.
Removed and installed as a slave in another machine: POST does properly identify it as before but windows (Explorer or Disk Mgr) does not see the drive.
Using GetDataBack-NTFS, this program sees drives '0' and '1' and can attempt data recovery, but with tons of errors. So I know it is properly seated and spins up okay. Now - what are my options and which is recommended? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1) Bad MBR - rebuild with ?? or 2) Bad MBR - impossible to rebuild lacking a saved copy which I don't have or 3) Forget fixing it - just attempt data recovery or
Bob
Background: eMachine had been working fine for 2+ years. No known physical trauma. Constant eTrust Antivirus protection. Have no OS installation disk, but do have the standard "Recovery" (Ghost) disk, but of course it is useless if computer can't see the drive. Also have made fdd set containing Recovery Console. Tech support is only semi helpful - to the point we're now dancing in circles.

| Front Side Bus bandwidth matching memory bandwidth... Kilowatt 22:55:13 |
| | Hi...thanks to read.
I wish to build a new computer based on the ASUS P5LD2. The cpu that will be installed will run on 800MHz FSB. Yet, i've read that the memory bandwidth, as much as possible, must match the fsb bandwidth. The maximum DDR2 speed that the P5LD2 accepts is 667MHz. It is a waste to install more that two DDR2 400MHz in dual-channel, considering that the theorical bandwidth of those modules together is 6400MB/sec wich is the bandwith of the 800MHz fsb? In the mean time i'm still googling to get more info. T IA for your reply.

| Athlon 64 dual-core question Hackworth 22:46:42 |
| | I've just taken advantage of the recent dramatic price drops and installed an Athlon 64 X2 4400+.
I installed the latest AMD CPU driver for CnQ. I also installed the dual-core patch from Microsoft (and created the new Throttle key for the registry and inside there, the PerfEnablePackageIdle DWORD set to 1).
My question: Is it still necessary to install Microsoft's dual-core fix and do the registry hack now that the AMD Dual Core Optimizer is available at AMD's site?

| Athlon XP underclocking Ton Vermeulen 22:22:05 |
| | Hi folks,
Most of you are busy with overclocking; my Athlon XP 2800+ went underclocking all by itself. The system consists mainly of the following: MB MSI K4V-L (MS-6712), FSB 333 Mhz, BIOS AMI Version 07.00T Ram 512MB Kingston PC2700 CL=2.5 Video ATI Radeon 9600 Pro etc.
It worked for almost 2 years at normal CPU clock speed of 2083 Mhz with base clock 167 Mhz and multiplier 12.5x. Some time ago the processor clock fell back to 1090 Mhz; in first instance I noticed the multiplier had gone to 6.5x and could not be adjusted in the BIOS settings. It is locked. Recently I looked further and found that the CPUID data of the processor has been changed or maybe erased partly. Earlier the CPUID gave the processor type and model as: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ ('amdcpuid.exe' or comparable program). Now it is: AMD Athlon(tm) XP (without speed indication). This can also be seen in the CPUID register 80000003, which is empty except for the 'X' character (50) in eax of 80000003. The checksum (or whatever it may be) MSR C0010015 has been changed as well from 0000-0000-0303-1008 originally to 0000-0000-0703-1008. I flashed the BIOS with the latest available with no effect. Can anybody give me a hint about the possibility of resetting/reprogramming the CPUID data? I may also unlock the multiplier, but I rather avoid this. Thanks in advance, Ton (Gorinchem, Netherlands)

| WD Rendezvous Express Backup Questions Gary 22:20:33 |
| | A am asking for a friend who is not technically knowledgeable:
Re: WD External Hard Drive One-Button Backup using Rendezvous (EMC/DANTZ) Express 6.5. You hit a button the WD external drive and Dantz backup automatically backs up incrementally.
I personally use Ghost 9 on my PC, and it takes me less than 20 minutes to backup two partitions, with verify. I am interested in working with Rendezvous Express and getting it to work on my friend's PC, because it came with his WD drive. However, he is more interested in disaster recovery in which you boot a CD/DVD and completely restore your system to a known previous state after a HD failure.
QUESTIONS:
(1) Why does Rendezvous Express backup actual files and not one compressed file representing your partition, like Ghost?
(2) Following Rendezvous Express instructions, I could not find a backup set name to create a disaster recover bootable CD. I am wondering if the "Out of the Box" profile configured by WD is to just do incremental backups and not make a backup set. Why?
(3) Is Rendezvous Express less a disaster recovery backup, like Ghost 9, and more of a daily incremental backup strategy?
(4) Based on my limited experience with Rendezvous Express, it feels like a mainframe computer backup utility that Dantz shoe-horned into the world of personal computers. Is that true?

| Possible to upgrade system without re-installing XP? Larc 21:41:49 |
| | I'm changing motherboard and CPU on my second system. Going from an MSI 845GE board to an ASUS 865PE and from a Pentium 4 (single core) to a Pentium D (dual core) CPU. All other hardware will remain the same. I've heard of a few people who had luck doing nothing except booting with a new board installed. Others have claimed an XP repair install with the new board in place makes all the necessary driver and setting changes. But I've never seemed to be able to get by without wiping my system drive clean and installing everything from scratch.
Any secrets to making the switch without having to completely re-install every bit of software?
Thanks for any help!

| New system will not post Beoweolf 17:56:47 |
| | I decided to update my Intel 1.6cpu...it is,was the last Intel box in my network. Decided to update to AMD2 socket, DDR, 3800+... Thent he fun began!
All the M/B required PCI express card, Ka-ching, Next, all the boards requried DDR2,Ka-ching, Ka-ching. None of the "inexpensive" boards had more than 2 IDE slots, so new M/B, Ka-ching, Ka-ching, Ka-ching! Format doesn't fit the old case... OK, bottom line, I have a new system, new case, New power supply (old 20 pin is not replaced with New 24 pin, ....just in case).
System will not post no matter what. The system is on a KVM, so that is my next magical trick, to see if it will boot/post with old tech CRT, Keyboard and wired mouse.
symptom: everything spins up, no video display (using either on-board video or PCI-e card, check memory and re-seated it several times...beep at start-up can be either memory not recognised or Video not being recognise.
I did try a SATA drive as well as the previous drives from the old system (WD caviar's 40Gb - 2001 and 2003...they are still running strong since 2001 and 2003 on the second). I have stripped everything not totally necessary for boot up, still no post and that same damned, mocking beep. new case is Antec, new M/B is Gigabyte.
Any diagnostic help will be appreciated.

| | Looks like the price cuts that Intel did have worked for it. Not too bad, but it's certainly not back at the 90%+ marketshares it had in retail in the not too distant past. It's never going to get to those levels ever again, not with the anti-trust lawsuit hanging over it.

| AMD might indeed be considering open-sourcing ATI drivers Yousuf Khan 14:17:28 |
| | Just as we've been discussing in other threads about whether AMD would open-source the ATI drivers, it looks like it will. It looks like they're talking about a "functional subset" of the ATI drivers, which probably means all of the game cheats are being exorcised before release into the OS community.
Yousuf Khan
"Lastly, and remember you heard it here, AMD is strongly considering open-sourcing at least a functional subset of ATI’s graphics drivers. It’s time for X Window System, OpenGL, and client virtualization for which ATI binary drivers aren’t available to escape the ghetto of the 1980s-era framebuffer. And what a boon for PR. If AMD’s graphics cards were the only ones with open device drivers, it might affect a buying decision or two." http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/08/02/32OPcurve_1.html

| Problem with flash drive - slow data transfer Guest 09:30:53 |
| | My flash drive (Imation, 1GB) has off late been behaving strangely. Have been trying to transfer data from my PC (Win XP) onto it and it takes 102 minutes to transfer 236 MB of data.
I remember connecting it to a Windows 98 PC sometime back and trying to transfer data. It was not detected on the Win 98 PC. However, could it have been corrupted the FAT due to this?
I tried formatting it and then copying, however it did not help matters. After formatting, it shows the status as healthy. However, data transfer still takes ages!
How do I get the flash drive back in good running condition. Any help from this forum is helpfull.
Thanks in advance,
MA

| AMD's marketshare did still manage to go up Bbbl67 06:58:24 |
| | Despite the onset of the major price war, and Intel sabotaging its own sales and inventory levels, along with those of AMD's by pre-hyping the Core 2 processors, AMD still managed to get a 1% point increase in marketshare in this past quarter. That's according to Mercury Research. There are other research firms that will report later too, which will have their own data.

Okay, be that as it may, if reporters are taking liberties with their stories, then do you have an explanation for this story?
PC World PC World's Techlog http://blogs.pcworld.com/techlog/archives/002494.html
PC World's Harry McCracken:> "For me, though, the most memorable moment of the morning was a completely unexpected one. The event kicked off with a speech by Intel CEO Paul Ottelini in which he talked, among other things, about the era in which the CPU wars were about clockspeed. To make his point, he had a slide in which he showed covers of old computer magazines, going all the way back to the days when a 90-MHz machine was a hot rod.> Here's the slide (which is a bit fuzzy because it's a still from a video I shot with my little Canon Elph)> I wasn't surprised by the old covers, since we'd given Intel some images of old PCWs to help them out. But I was startled, to say the least, by that PC World on the far right, showing the January, 2003 issue with its great big "First 3-GHz PCs for 2003" line.> How come I was flummoxed by a PCW cover? Well, we never did that one. Here's the real January, 2003 issue, which did mention 3-Ghz PCs, but as a text-only line above our logo." Sounds like liberties with the truth are being taken all around here, doesn't it?

| | Hitachi Seagate periodic calibration noises
I hear these drives make weird noises at regular intervals due to some kind of calibration procedure.
What up with that ?
People want quiet drives and they add weird noises ? I also read where DVD burner manufacturers specifically state not to use a hard drive that uses disruptive calibrations with their burners.

| Best optical mouse with long battery life? BatteryLife 01:55:00 |
| | I currently use a Dell optical mouse that came with my Dell WinXP media center. Unfortunately the mouse uses up batteries very fast! My computer is left on 24 hours day, and usually the mouse needs two new AA batteries every 2 - 3 weeks.
A mouse with rechargeable batteries would be a better solution, but is there not an optical mouse available that uses regular batteries but doesn't drain them so fast?

| laptop hard drive compatibility Guest 00:01:24 |
| | Hi, I need to find a replacement for this 1.8" hitachi c4k40 hard drive:
http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.c3a19fd2cb7342d3c15ebaa3eac4f0a0
But it appears to have been discontinued. The closest replacement I can get hold of is the c4k60:
http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.c3a19fd2cb7342d3c15ebaa3eac4f0a0
However, this appears to have 50 pins whereas the other has 44 pins. The connector in the laptop is 44 pins. Will it somehow be compatible still? Oar does anyone know of another alternative?
many thanks
