| Graphics card problem...... Ian Stevens 01:07:24 |
| | Hi,
Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, but here goes anyway. I just installed a GeForce 5500 graphics card, and everything seemed to be fine. I got it for the twinview functionality. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the monitor display is VERY green, whereas the clone image on the TV is as it should be. Changing color settings on the monitor makes no difference, neither does changing color settings on the card. Any ideas what might be causing this? My instinct is that the monitor is dying, but it seems strange to me that this has happened right after installing some new hardware.
Many thanks
ian
btw, running XP

| Drive Image problem CWatters 22:50:19 |
| | After a year of working fine Drive Image gave me this error once during image creation....
Error EA39070A: The internal structure of the PQI file is invalid or unsupported.
and all further attempts fail with this one.....
Error EA390712: Open failed.
Symantec suggest it's an access problem - but that user can create files on the target drive no problem. My other PC can backup to the same target. There is loads of space and it's been well defragmented now.
Any suggestions?
Perhaps reinstall DI?

| Best cheap motherboard for an Intel core 2 duo cpu Pete 22:45:17 |
| | I'm looking for the cheapest motherboard that fully supports the intel core 2 duo range of processors and has SATA 300 raid 0 and 1. Would be nice if the board had some overclocking potential but I know cheap and overclock don't go together.
Anyone know if new chipsets are coming out for this cpu and when they will arrive. I heard nforce5 was coming.
Thanks

| 5.1 Audigy 2 system but sound only comes out of one earphone Kolin Tregaskes 21:32:27 |
| | Hello,
I have a Creative Audigy 2 installed on my 64 bit Windows x64 machine. I've set up the sound options for 5.1 sound but when I play music in Windows Media Player when my earphones plugged the music only comes out of the left ear. Do you know how I can set up my machine to be in 5.1 and work for headphones? I've had this problem before and got it fixed but looks like I've lost the mail that had the fix in it.

It says PC100/133.
Then it says:
133MHz operating speed
Can it operate at 100 MHz as well? I thought the PC100 meant that, but it only says 133MHz operating speed.

| Motherboard recommendation needed Tungley@Spamfree.Bellsouth.Net 17:55:39 |
| | Hi folks, need some help here. About to build my first system in many years. Haven't kept up lately, but have been doing some research and such. Gonna go with an AMD AM2 based system, most likely using an Athlon 64 3800+ chip. Trying to keep my costs down, so I'll be using my current hard drives, peripherals, etc. I don't do gaming at all, so my video needs are minimal - thus my intent is to find a good mobo with integrated video, so I don't have to buy a new video card. Likewise with integrated sound. Integrated LAN would be nice, but not a requirement, since I have NIC cards a plenty.
I've used Shuttle and Soyo boards, then settled in with ASUS years ago, and have been partial to that brand. My only current choice for an ASUS would seem to be the M2NPV-VM. But my reading of various forums and such tells me that it's a problematic board, and that many are DOA. Since my purchase will be from an online vendor, I'm not sure I want to take a chance in this regard, if the board is not ready for prime time.
So, does anyone have any other recommendations? I've known people who used and liked Abit and Gigabyte, and I see some new vendors like FoxConn that seem to have good reps. But I'm not familiar with any of their lines, so I figured I'd come here and ask around. Open to any and all suggestions. Thanks.

| Help with unstable system K8N Neo4 Plat /X2 4400 Don Burnette 16:33:16 |
| | Hey gang, I am pulling my hair out on this one. I have built several systems over the years, but this one, continues to be unstable, and I am running out of things to try. This has been going on now, for about 6 months.
System Specs:
MSI K8N Neo4 Plat socket 939 Athlon X2 4400+ Thermalrite XP-90 HS 2 ea 250 gb WD Sata hard drives ( non-raid ) Saphire Radeon X850XT PCIe 256mb video card Creative X-FI Extreme Music soundcard 2gb Corsair XMS LL ddr ram ( 2 x 1gb ) Antec Neo HE 550w power supply Windows XP Pro SP2 with all udpates, also have the AMD X2 processor update, and Microsoft dual core update.
I do not have a heat problem. Processor idles around 32c, under load , around 36-38c. All fans are running properly. I have all the latest driver updates for my soundcard and videocard. I just recently added the X-Fi soundcard, however, system has been unstable since I built it in early Feb. I had an Audigy 2 ZS before that. I first installed the mb drivers, with the Nvidia IDE SW driver, then, removed them, and reinstalled, without the Nvidia IDE SW driver. I have tested the ram, with Memtest 86, with no errors. The ram is running, in dual channel. I recently, added, the Neo HE 550 w power supply, as my previous power supply, was only 20 pin, and the HE 550 , is 24 - thinking that might be the issue, however it was not. I am running the memory timings, on " auto". I am not overclocking the system yet, wanted to get it stable first. I updated the motherboard bios to 1.C, no change.
What happens is, usually when reading email with Outlook, perusing newsgroups with Outlook Express, or browsing the internet with Firefox, my system just " locks up". Occasionally, I will get a bluescreen, about a " machine check error exception ", but usually, it just freezes with no blue screen, and no error messages in event viewer. I have to power off the system, by holding in the power button for 5 seconds to force it to shut down. I then restart it, and it runs fine, until it locks up again. It is getting to where, this is happening, at least once a day.
I have thought about blowing out this installation of Windows XP Pro, and formatting and doing another clean install ( I did a clean install when I built this system). But, I really don't think it is a software issue, I think it is somehow a hardware issue, due to the machine check error blue screen I occasionally get, but I do not know what else to try. I am also, about to the point, of considering a different motherboard. I had good success with the K8N Neo2 Plat, Nforce3, never had a problem, but this sytem, is giving me a lot of grief.
My windows installation is very clean, I run AVG Antivirus, Spwareblaster, Ad Aware, and Spybot on a regular basis.
I hope I have included all the relevant details. If any of you more experienced folks have any ideas or suggestions, I would certainly appreciate it!!
Thanks in advance,
-- Don

| Router Problem Jethro 15:35:08 |
| | If you recall, I had a router problem involving a DI-Link 704P router.
Now I have a new D-Link EBR 2310 4-Port'er It is connected to an external cable modem. I have two XP PRO machines connected together, one AMD the other P4. It has been working fine. Now suddenly it is not. What has happened it this:
If everything is connected, I can access files between machines just fine. But I lose internet access completely from both machines.
If I connect machine 2 (arbitrary choice) only to the modem direct, I can access the internet from machine 2, but of course I can't access files between machines, and of course I can't access internet from machine 1.
This tells me the modem must be okay. It suggests to me that something is affecting router access to the machines insofar as internet accessing is concerned, BUT NOT FILE-SHARING. What could it be?
Lately, I am thinking I simply cannot win.
Can anyone help here?
Jethro

| Hard drive enclosure power supply Harvy 15:29:23 |
| | Hi, I recently purchased a hard drive enclosure. When I coneected everything up and plug the powers supply, the power supply adapter blew. I googled for a replacement adapter but no luck, I searched for Switching adapter (which was written on the power supply) but then found that the connecters to the actual enclosure were different. They look like a PS/2 adapter on the end, in the manual they have 5V, 12V and ground. I have searched for 2 hours on this adapter and have found it bundled with hard drive enclosurse but not actually available on its own. I would buy another hard drive enclosure but that would be a waste. Can anyone shed light on where these adapters have disappeared too?

| the issues between 32 bit PCs and 64 bit. Frisky 06:52:27 |
| | Let's say I get a 64 bit PC then the windows OS I'd use is x64 XP Professional Operating System.?
Would normal 32 bit applications work? Would my excel and word install CD I used w/32 bit win2k work? i.e.. is the 64 bit OS backward compatible w/my existing software?
Should I make sure that drivers are available? Some hardware does not have 64 bit XP drivers yet? I assume 32 bit drivers won't work.
Any other "gotchas"?

| need help with BIOS update Herman 04:06:19 |
| | I want to update a BIOS chip in an old motherboard, but I find I have an option for a 1Mb chip or a 2Mb chip. I don't know how to tell if my chip is 1 or 2Mb, and if I flash it with the wrong size my board will be dead.
The board is a Lucky Star 6ABX2V - manufacturer no longer exists as a hardware manufacturer.
These are the details given by the BIOS ident utility from www.esupport.com -
BIOS Date: 08/21/98 BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG BIOS ID: 08/21/1998-i440BX-W977TF-2A69KL1AC OEM Sign-On: #AD3-05 Chipset: Intel 440BX/ZX rev 2 Superio: Winbond 977TF rev 0 found at port 3F0h OS: Win98 CPU: PentiumВ® II (0.25 Вµm) 400 MHz BIOS ROM In Socket: Unknown BIOS ROM Size: Unknown Memory Installed: 319 MB Memory Maximum: Unknown
As you can see the identification utility can't determine the ROM size either.
The reason I want to try to update this BIOS is because since this machine was updated from Windows 98 fisrt edition to Windows 98 Second Edition it has been impossible to shut down the computer - it just hangs with a blank screen and blinking cursor before it gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen. The computer will only shutdown correctly if I start Windows in safe mode.
I have exhausted all other hardware/software update avenues, and BIOS update is only option left I haven't tried.
Windows Update has been run and everything is current. All add-in PCI cards have had their drivers updated to the current version. These cards are Dlink DWL-G510 wireless card, Silicon Image Sil 0680 Ultra-133 Medley ATA Raid card, Creative Sound Blaster PCI64, and a 32Mb nVidia Riva TNT2 model 64. The chipset drivers for the motherboard are updated and current.
I'm hoping that upgrading the BIOS will fix the shutdown problem as I have run out of other things to try - unless someone has any other ideas?

| Should I use onboard network/firewire or dedicated pci cards? Pete 03:27:51 |
| | Hi
I'm going to buy the Asrock 939SLI32-eSATA2 motherboard. http://www.asrock.com/product/939SLI32-eSATA2.htm
The board comes with firewire and 10/100/100 lan.
I have 2 network cards doing nothing as follows:
Allied Telesyn 2500 Network Card closest I can find is here: http://www.alliedtelesyn.co.uk/en-gb...fid=54&pid=196
D-Link DFE-530TX Network Card http://www.alliedtelesyn.co.uk/en-gb/products/cat/product.asp?cid=12&fid=54&pid=196
I also have a Pinnacle Firewire Booster 2B card doing nothing http://cgi.ebay.com/PINNACLE-FIRE-WIRE-CARD-BOOSTER-2B-1-0-NEVER-USED_W0QQitemZ8735051165QQcategoryZ3759QQcmdZViewItem
As it will cost me nothing either way, should I use these cards or the onboard solutions.
Will the onboard solutions drain much power from the cpu or is it negligable now?
Would the onboard solutions, being newer, have more features?
Would using more pci cards mean fewer resources?
Thanks

| Cheap Hard Drive Config for Photoshop User Guest 03:08:08 |

I am going insane because Photoshop takes such a long time because of my big files. I have figured out that no realistic amount of RAM is going to do, so I have to get a faster hard drive system. My images are 1 gigabyte files, i print 6x8 feet.
I haven't dealt with computers in a while. I was planning to get 3 of the 80G Western Digital SATA-150 WD800JD. One for the OS/data, one for applications(Photoshop)/data, and one for the scratch disk of photoshop. Is that good? I was also thinking about getting three of the Seagate ST173404LCV Seagate ST173404LCV Hard Drive SCSI 73GB 10000RPM 80.
What should i get? Does it matter?
