Scoreboard describes nonexistant processes, MaxClients are reached

Aaron Birkland 6 January 2005 19:54:56
 Hello,
I have come across a vexing problem that I have yet to find a
problem to. In a nutshell, I reach the MaxClients limit (set high,
256) while only having a handful of server processes in existance and
very few users, given enough elapsed time.

I see a problem in that server-status is telling me I have lots of
active servers that are stuck 'closing conection' like this:

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCW____...................................
................................................................

SrvPIDAccMCPU SSReqConnChildSlot...
0-043302/3/3C 0.013545701.70.010.01 ...
1-043311/4/4C 0.012643202.20.000.00 ...
2-043323/3/3C 0.013545702.10.000.00 ...
3-043333/3/3C 0.013545702.10.000.00 ...
4-043341/5/5C 0.032643200.10.010.01 ...
5-043411/2/2C 0.002643200.40.0000.000 ...
(and so on)

Problem is, all the processes listed that are recorded as 'closing
connection' do not exist any more. In this example, I had about 150
such processes listed, yet only six actual running processes on the
system.

Now, a bit of background: I am using apache 2.0.50 on solaris 9 (aka
sunos 5.9), and it is compiled to use the prefork MPM. The server I
am describing is running on a nonstandard port, and we have a saparate
server set up which has a VirtualHost set up such that it proxies to
the one in question, so it basicaly doesn't do much and hasn't been
giving us troubles. This setup has worked fine for years on various
older apache versions (pre-2.0) on servers running linux. So two
things changed: We are using apache 2, and we are on a Solaris
machine.

I don't know that much about Apache's internals, but it seems like
this behviour is abnormal and there is some sort of a schism between
the scoreboard and reality. As I don't understand the mechanism by
which these are related, I do not have any intuition as to what the
cause of the problem may be (i.e. under what conditions (if any) may
something like this happen). Can anybody help me out here, perhaps
even by pointing out somewhere to look? I couldn't find a similar
situation in the archives or on google, though I don't know if I used
or am using the correct vocabulary to describe it. Thanks very much!

-Aaron
